Chloe Hurst, 29, has always been drawn to gardening.

Growing up, her mum always got her ‘in the dirt’ helping her with projects, so when Chloe moved into her own house in Ontario, Canada, it was only natural that she started her own garden.

At first, she started off with the standard plants that were available at local stores like Home Depot, but when Chloe’s friend opened a nursery, she was inspired by the ‘beautiful black petunias’ she had on show. She knew she had to recreate her own version – and take it to the next level with her very own ‘goth garden.’

‘I’ve always had a darker aesthetic,’ she tells Metro.co.uk. ‘When I saw those I went into spiral mode and decided I needed to make my entire garden black.’

That was around five years ago, and Chloe is still searching for more.

Working as a brand designer and graphic designer, branding is ‘ingrained’ in Chloe, so when she’s interested in building and adopting a particular aesthetic, she’ll ‘go all out with it.’

‘I’ve always been in the Gothic culture with the music, and all the architecture and the style of the home, and I thought, why not bring it outside to and create this really cool atmosphere?’ she adds.

It isn’t just her garden that’s inspired by this Gothic aesthetic; the interiors of her house follow a similar pattern.

‘I wanted to paint every room in my house black. My whole house is very Gothic, dark and moody, and the whole goal is [for it] to feel like a haunted castle, even though I live in a one-storey bungalow,’ she laughs.

Channelling this aesthetic through her gardening is therapeutic for Chloe; it serves as a distraction from the buzz of the online world. On TikTok, she’s built a considerable following: 89.7K, and now she’s inspiring others to learn more about gardening.

‘Gardening is quite literally grounding yourself in the dirt,’ she recalls.

‘It’s just a moment for me to completely detach from the digital world, and just relax. It’s a labour of love – you come out of a gardening session covered in mud and scratches from the rose bush, but it’s fulfilling, and it just feels so good to connect with nature.’

Inside her home, she says she’s ‘horrible’ with house plants and has a habit of killing them, but she has successfully nurtured some raven ZZs and shamrocks.

These are the UK’s most hated gardening tasks

Gardening has a number of benefits: it’s a good form of exercise, it’s calming and it supports good mental health.

But that doesn’t stop some of the tasks necessary to keep our gardens looking pretty, feeling like chores sometimes.

According to research by Gazeboshop, weeding is at the top of that list, with 40% of people admitting they find it to be the most annoying gardening task.

Following that is raking, digging and chopping down trees, and then trimming hedges, planting, and watering plants.

So, what is it about dark plants that draws Chloe in? For her, the allure lies in the fact that they’re both rare and ‘mysterious.’

‘Dark plants are very mystifying, and you just don’t see them very often. People ask me all the time, “is this a filter?” And I think that’s what’s so intriguing about that colour, because as much as I do love a colourful garden, there’s something about it that’s super poisonous and mysterious,’ she details.

Though some of her fans assume that she has a huge garden, Chloe is restricted on space.

However, she’s made it her own with a few ‘stars of the show’ – and some of her favourite elements are the black mondo, the Arabian Night Calais with ‘dark purple and white speckles,’ and the tulips.

Though Chloe doesn’t plan on staying in her current home forever, she still has plans for her beloved goth garden.

‘The goal is to own a Victorian home with a large garden, but that’s not going to be happening any time soon,’ she details.

‘What I’m doing right now is just working on the actual structure of my garden. We’re getting a new fence this year because it’s falling down, and I’m building a rock border around it.’

So, what would Chloe advise others who want to start their own goth garden? Firstly: patience.

‘When people first get into gardening, it’s very exciting and people want it to all happen at once, but really just enjoy the process,’ she suggests.

‘Part of the fun is hand-selecting pieces for your garden. If you get it all at once it could be overwhelming. Enjoy the process – it might be long, it might be short, but just enjoy it.

‘Definitely look up your zone, too. Zone sun requirements, so the watering and what works well in your area, understand what perennials and annuals are in your area. Do your research and enjoy the process.’
