McDonald’s is taking steps to stop late night drama breaking out by making the vibes more chill.

McDonald’s can often be the spot that young people all gravitate to after a certain time. After all, it’s got everything you could want – shelter from the rain, a bathroom and decent-priced food.

While most kids are well-behaved, there’s always some that have to spoil it and cause trouble – which is why the fast food chain has come up with a few ways to deter youngsters from hanging around.

Here is what you need to know.

Why does McDonald’s play classical music at night?

One branch in Wrexham, North Wales (yes, the home of the football club owned by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney) has started doing just that by playing classical music after 5pm to make it a less desirable place for teens to hang out.

Other McDonald’s branches have since followed suit. This follows chains in America, Canada, and Australia pulling the same trick to combat anti-social behaviour, with the restaurants also turning off their WiFi.

This isn’t a new trick, but it is quite new to the UK.

As one Reddit user previously explained: ‘Today I learnt McDonald’s is experimenting with playing classical music over the restaurant’s loudspeakers at night in hopes of stopping fights from breaking out.’

In reply user OrientalKitten16 said: ‘There is a Maccas in my city that plays classical music outside the front door all day, every day to keep delinquent kids away.’

Another user, hypnocat83, added: ‘The McDonald’s in downtown Ottawa did this for years – it stopped neither fights nor riffraff…’

A third, Constant_Rookie, revealed it wasn’t just classical music. ‘The one I used to work at played music from the 70s and 80s specifically to keep teenagers from staying long.’

Although, it seems McDonald’s isn’t the only business using this tactic.

Another Redditor, krrcjr121612, revealed: ‘I used to work at a gas station and we played classical music really loudly outside to prevent people from loitering and scaring customers.’

So, the next time you pop down to your local McDonald’s, you could end up vibing to the sound of Beethoven. Seems like a pretty relaxing way to eat a burger to us!
