Black Sabbath and rock world remember ‘fearless’ Ozzy Osbourne after his death aged 76
He'd been battling ill health since 2018.
Black Sabbath have paid tribute to bandmate Ozzy Osbourne following his death aged 76.
The family of the rock icon released a statement on Tuesday night, sharing that he had died this morning.
The message, from his wife Sharon Osbourne and four of his six children – Kelly, Jack and Aimee, read: ‘It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning.
‘He was with his family and surrounded by love.
‘We ask everyone to respect our family’s privacy at this time. Sharon, Jack, Kelly, Aimee and Louis.’
Soon after the news of his death broke, friends and fans of the musician began to pay tribute.

Formed in Birmingham in 1968 by Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Bill Ward and Geezer Butler, Black Sabbath has sold over 70 million records, won two Grammys and been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
A few hours after Osbourne’s death, Iommi said he ‘can’t really find the words’.
‘I just can’t believe it! My dear dear friend Ozzy has passed away only weeks after our show at Villa Park. It’s just such heart-breaking news that I can’t really find the words, there won’t ever be another like him. Geezer (Butler), Bill (Ward) and myself have lost our brother. My thoughts go out to Sharon and all the Osbourne family. Rest in peace Oz. Tony,’ he wrote.
He told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme on Wednesday, July 24: ‘It is really a shock. It’s really hit me today to be honest, but yeah, a terrible shock.’
He said of their reunion, final concert: ‘It was brilliant to be with all the guys again… and it was brilliant for Ozzy because he really wanted to do that, you know, he felt at home there and it was really good for him.
‘It was good for all of us, and lovely to be able to get together for a final thing. I mean, we didn’t realise it was going to be this final. We didn’t expect him to… but he hasn’t looked well for a while.’
When asked about what he will remember about the late star, he said: ‘I think of the fun we had. Normally, he’s bouncing around on stage and coming up to me pulling faces. We always have a laugh… it’s always been like that forever.
‘Even though we take the music seriously, we did make each other laugh within the set and I’ve always known him like that.’

So glad we got to do it one last time, back in Aston. Love you.’
Ward, that band’s drummer, posted a photo of himself and Osbourne on X, writing: ‘Where will I find you now? In the memories, our unspoken embraces, our missed phone calls, no, you’re forever in my heart.Deepest condolences to Sharon and all family members. RIP Sincere regrets to all the fans. Never goodbye. Thank you forever. Bill Ward.’

Alice Cooper said in a statement while on stage in Cardiff last night: ‘The whole world is mourning Ozzy tonight. Over his long career, he earned immense respect among his peers and from fans around the world as an unmatched showman and cultural icon. I always saw Ozzy as a cross between the prince of darkness, which is the persona his fans saw, and the court jester. That was the side that his family and friends saw.
‘He was and will continue to be a rock n roll legend. Rock n Roll is a family and a fraternity. When we lose one of our own it bleeds. I wish I would have gotten to know my brother Ozzy better.Sharon, Jack, Kelly, Aimee and the rest of the Ozzy brood – our prayers are with you tonight. A titanic boulder has crashed, but rock will roll on.’
Fellow heavy metal band Metallica shared an old photo with Osbourne, simply captioning their post with a broken love heart.
Kiss’s Gene Simmons said people are ‘devastated’ in the wake ofOsbourne’s death.

Slipknot also posted ‘All our love to the Osbournes’ on the band’s official accounts. Kelly is engaged to the band’s DJ and keyboardist, Sid Wilson.In a social media post, they said:

Sir Elton John said Osbourne was a ‘huge trailblazer’. ‘So sad to hear the news of Ozzy Osbourne passing away. He was a dear friend and a huge trailblazer who secured his place in the pantheon of rock gods – a true legend,’ he posted on Instagram.

Aston Villa, the football club where Osbourne played his final gig earlier this month remembered the ‘special connection’ he had to the West Midlands team. ‘Aston Villa Football Club is saddened to learn that world-renowned rockstar and Villan, Ozzy Osbourne has passed away,’ it posted on social media.
‘Growing up in Aston, not far from Villa Park, Ozzy always held a special connection to the club and the community he came from. The thoughts of everyone at Aston Villa are with his wife Sharon, his family, friends, and countless fans at this extremely difficult time. Rest in peace, Ozzy.’
Commenting on Osbourne’s last social media post, musician Nile Rodgers said: ‘Rest In Power Ozzy.’
David Beckham said he was ‘so sad to see Ozzy leave us’. ‘Thank you for entertaining us. Sending love to Sharon, the kids and the family,’ he added.
Posting a photo with Osbourne and his wife, actor Jason Momoa wrote on Instagram: ‘Love you @ozzyosbourne All my aloha @sharonosbourne and ohana. So grateful. RIP.’

Parkinson’s UK also shared a touching statement about the star.

Meanwhile, animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals released a statement.
‘Ozzy Osbourne was a legend and a provocateur, but PETA will remember the Prince of Darkness most fondly for the gentle side he showed to animals—most recently cats, by using his fame to decry painful, crippling declawing mutilations,’ senior vice president Lisa Lange said.
‘Ozzy may have been the singer, but his wife, Sharon, and his daughter, Kelly, were of one voice when it meant protecting animals. Ozzy will be missed by animal advocates the world over.’
In recent years, the Prince of Darkness, who played his final show with his band just a few weeks ago, had faced numerous health problems since 2018, including being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.
