Original Inbetweeners star addresses comeback news after announcement sends fans wild

One of the original The Inbetweeners stars has addressed the return of the hilariously puerile show, after fans were left breathless with excitement at the news on Monday.

The foul-mouthed quartet could soon make a comeback, after the comedy hit stormed E4 in 2008, spawning two films and an endlessly quotable catalogue of awkward moments.

Show creators Iain Morris and Damon Beesley said in a statement this week: ‘Incredibly exciting to be plotting more adventures for our four favourite friends (ooh friends).’

Joe Thomas, 41, has now addressed The Inbetweeners reunion, after the gang were last seen on holiday in the 2014 sequel film.

Thomas, who played spiky-haired Simon, said he is game for getting the gang back together – but also issued a warning to fans about what to expect from a reboot.

‘I feel enormously close to all those people and, obviously, I love spending time with them,’ Thomas told The Sun.

‘If there was an opportunity to spend more time with them in any capacity, I’d love that… that’s pretty much all I can say.’

It’s still unclear in what capacity or even what TV platform the show might return, but production companies Banijay UK and Fudge Park Productions have struck an agreement which ‘paves the way for the return of the hit comedy title.’

Yet Thomas has also warned that, given that the actors are in their middle age and at very different stages to the awkward teenage years that made the show such a hit, it may not be quite as funny.

He said: ‘I think wisdom does not make a very good narrative. The Inbetweeners is full of characters who are delusional to a large extent.

‘It’s a show about delusion. Simon is naïve and romantic and thinks that he’s going to have this love story and Will is pompous, he’s intellectually delusional. Neil’s obviously stupid and Jay’s clearly delusional. He thinks that he’s this kind of sex god when actually he’s just this very vulnerable young man.

‘When you get older, your delusions fall away, you look at life as it is. It means you get into less stupid situations I suppose, also the challenges get bigger you can make larger mistakes when you get older.’
