Netflix has released its first proper look at The Witcher season four – sharing an exciting glimpse of Liam Hemsworth in action as monster hunter Geralt of Rivia.

The Australian actor, 35, has taken over from Superman star Henry Cavill, who played the character for three seasons between 2019 and 2023.

With Cavill, 42, officially laying down his sword and blond wig in 2022, third Hemsworth brother Liam (see also, Chris and Luke) has stepped into his mighty boots for season four.

An exclusive clip of Hemsworth as Geralt aired during the Canelo Alvarez vs Terence Crawford boxing match on Saturday night, introduced by the actor himself.

‘Hey everyone, Liam Hemsworth here,’ the former Hunger Games star said in a pre-recorded message.

‘I am excited to announce that Season four of The Witcher will be streaming on Netflix, October 30th. Here is a quick clip of me in action as Geralt of Rivia.’

In the clip, Geralt and his compatriots face off against a spectral entity which emerges from its woodland tomb to give the monster hunter quite the run-around.

After being violently dragged across the forest floor, Geralt manages to turn the tables by shoving his sword into the ground.

This allows him to trap the Wraith and then yank its heart from its chest.

After crushing the organ in his gloved hand, he glowers dramatically while the creature dissipates into fog and dust.

Picking up from where the third series ended, Geralt’s latest adventure finds Geralt separated from allies Yennifer (Anya Chalotra) and Ciri (Freya Allan).

New companions emerge as their paths diverge, and together (and separately) the group attempts to navigate a continent ravaged by war.

As Geralt attempts to whip his new followers into shape, Yennefer works to rebuild her magic, while Ciri joins a group of outlaws known as The Rats.

Newcomers Laurence Fishburne and Sharlto Copley will join the cast for the fourth series, playing characters Regis and Leo Bonhart, respectively.

Season four was shot back-to-back with the also greenlit season five, which was informed by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski’s The Witcher books – as opposed to the video game series of the same name, which is set after the conclusion of the books.

As previous series (loosely) adapted works in Sapkowski’s saga, so four and five will follow the story of the books Baptism of Fire, The Tower of the Swallow, and Lady of the Lake.

This, in turn, will draw The Witcher series to a close.

‘We’re thrilled to be able to bring Andrzej Sapkowski’s books to an epic and satisfying conclusion,’ said to Tudum.

‘It wouldn’t be our show if we didn’t push our family of characters to their absolute limit — stay tuned to see how the story ends.’

Of his appointment, Hemsworth said in a statement: ‘As a Witcher fan, I’m over the moon about the opportunity to play Geralt of Rivia.’

He continued: ‘Henry Cavill has been an incredible Geralt, and I’m honored that he’s handing me the reins and allowing me to take up the White Wolf’s blades for the next chapter of his adventure.

‘Henry, I’ve been a fan of yours for years and was inspired by what you brought to this beloved character. I may have some big boots to fill, but I’m truly excited to be stepping into The Witcher world.’

After stepping back from the role, Cavill said via a statement: ‘My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for Season four.

‘In my stead, the fantastic Mr. Liam Hemsworth will be taking up the mantle of the White Wolf. As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam’s take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men.’

He added: ‘Liam, good sir, this character has such a wonderful depth to him — enjoy diving in and seeing what you can find.’

Cavill’s sudden departure from the role only added to speculation that he’d stepped down due to ‘creative differences’ in how the stories were adapted, although he has never publicly weighed in to say as much.

The Argylle star, meanwhile, will be stepping into an entirely different fantasy world, two years after first revealing that he would be joining Amazon in their adaptation of the Games Workshop Warhammer universe.

In an Instagram post last December, he announced: ‘My incredible team and I, alongside the brilliant minds at Games Workshop, have been working away in concept rooms, breaking down approaches to the enormity and magnificence of the Warhammer world.’

Cavill continued: ‘Together, we’ve been sifting through the plethora of incredible characters and poring over old tomes and texts.

‘Our combined efforts have led us to a fantastic place to start our Universe, which has been agreed upon by those up on high at both Amazon and Games Workshop.

‘That starting place shall, for now, remain a secret. Watch this space, though—more to come in time!’

The Witcher season four will stream on Netflix from October 30, 2025.
