Fans of a reality hoax sitcom show have been left questioning how a second season can be pulled off.

First airing in 2023, Jury Duty followed a fake jury trial, with Ronald Gladden finding himself at the centre of the hoax and being completely unaware of what was unfolding.

After seeing a Craigslist advertisement asking for people willing to be part of a jury pool for a civil trial in Southern California that would be covered by a TV documentary crew, the solar contractor from San Diego signed up.

As the trial progressed, things increasingly became more dysfunctional, with it eventually revealed to Gladden the case was fake and everyone else was a paid actor – including James Marsden, who played an insufferable version of himself.

The show was a massive hit – with viewers calling it ‘outstanding’, ‘unique’ and ‘life-affirming’.

It was also nominated for three Emmy Awards, two Golden Globes and also won a Peabody Award.

This week it announced the series would be returning, with Variety reporting that it would now instead be set at a corporate retreat rather than a courtroom. It has also reportedly already been filmed.

Despite being fans of the original, which they called ‘underrated’ and a ‘gem’, many questioned how – and if – a follow-up could work.

‘How do they do it twice?!’ user TheBatemanFlex posted on Reddit.

‘I thought this show was one of the funniest I’ve seen in a long time. But that being said, i feel like it was the type of show you could really only pull off once,’ automaticzero shared.

‘They got SUPER lucky with that original person and his likability and tolerance for the ridiculousness. Which I think made it work. It might have been lightening in a bottle but I’d love to see it again,’ another added.

However, as others pointed out: ‘Very smart for them to announce it after it finished filming so people aren’t expecting it.’

When previously asked about potential future seasons, showrunner Cody Heller told Variety: ‘Obviously, it would have to be a whole different universe. You couldn’t just do jury duty again, because then people would be like, “Wait a second”.

‘But I do think that it’s possible. I do think there’s a million different worlds that this kind of thing could exist in.’

Jury Duty is streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
