In a magical full-circle moment, Tom Felton will reprise his role as Draco Malfoy in the Broadway production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

The announcement dropped today, June 5 – fittingly, Draco Malfoy’s canonical birthday – sending fans into a frenzy.

It comes following speculation that he could play Lucius in the TV reboot, with Potterheads now crossing their fingers for a double Malfoy return.

Felton, 37, is set to join the cast at New York’s Lyric Theatre beginning November 11 for a strictly limited 19-week engagement.

The casting marks the first time a major film star from the original Harry Potter series has portrayed their character in a professional stage production of The Cursed Child, the hit play based on J.K. Rowling’s books.

‘Being a part of the Harry Potter films has been one of the greatest honors of my life,’ Felton said in a statement.

‘Joining this production will be a full-circle moment for me, because when I begin performances in ‘Cursed Child’ this fall, I’ll also be the exact age Draco is in the play.’

‘It’s surreal to be stepping back into his shoes — and of course his iconic platinum blond hair — and I am thrilled to be able to see his story through and to share it with the greatest fan community in the world,’ he added.

‘I look forward to joining this incredible company and being a part of the Broadway community.’

Felton made his West End debut in the supernatural thriller 2:22 – A Ghost Story in 2022.

Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender, producers behind the Broadway production, said in a statement that they can’t wait to see Felton portray the role ‘once again with the same depth, gravity, and humanity he has always brought to Draco.’

‘It’s not lost on us that this is a cultural moment charged with nostalgia, evolution, and emotion,’ Friedman and Callender said.

‘Tom’s return to Hogwarts bridges generations of fans and breathes new life into a beloved story. We’re beyond thrilled to welcome Tom back ‘home’ but also into a new family: our Broadway company.’

Felton was just 12 years old when he auditioned for Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, the first film in what would become one of the most successful film franchises in history. He went on to appear in all eight films across the franchise.

Interestingly, he initially auditioned for the roles of Harry Potter and Ron Weasley, even having his hair temporarily dyed to suit each character, before being cast as the infamous Slytherin student.

Felton has spoken extensively about playing Malfoy in the past, and even his relationship to fellow stars Rupert Grint, Daniel Radcliffe, and Emma Watson.

He told Readers Digest in 2024: ‘It took a long time to make those films, so we only spent maybe 10% of the day in our characters, but we spent a lot of time together as Daniel, Rupert, Emma and Tom.

‘People, for some reason, seem to ask that quite a bit, and they’re quite surprised that Dan’s one of my best friends, and Emma’s very close to me—well, everyone is. It sounds cheesy, but we’re actually a bit of a Potter family. It’s quite fun.’

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is the highest-grossing non-musical play in Broadway history, selling more than 10million tickets worldwide since its premiere in London in 2016.

Set 19 years after the final book, The Cursed Child follows Harry Potter’s son, Albus, as he struggles with the weight of his family’s legacy – and forms an unexpected bond with Draco Malfoy’s son, Scorpius.

Felton will portray Draco as an older man grappling with fatherhood and his complicated past.

It also has productions running currently in London, New York, Hamburg, and Tokyo.
