Previous Page Next PageFor the vast majority of people, school can be a very difficult place.
With the way teaching is set up to prioritise success in exams, many students with different interests in sports or the arts can feel alienated and excluded at times.
And that’s not to mention the universal issues teenagers experience, from dealing with anxiety to bullying.
Thankfully, Channel 4’s Educating Yorkshire does an extraordinary job of highlighting these struggles at the Thornhill Community Academy with headmaster Mr Burton.
Last week, viewers ‘welled up’ after seeing a headmaster diffuse a pupil’s tantrum who cried: ‘I can tell you don’t want me here’.
This time around, pupil Scott – who excels at rugby – struggles with behavioural issues at school.

After being presented with the opportunity to play for the Welsh national U16s team, he needs to make sure he stays on track at school to get in.
Amazingly, Scott does manage to get selected, and the Channel 4 show captures the heartwarming moment he finds out.
While waiting outside of a lesson, one of Scott’s friends asks him: ‘Have you got Wales trials?’, to which he replies, nervously: ‘I find out today.’
As he then starts to shout at his phone, he explains how he keeps thinking it is a notification to say whether he has made the team as he undergoes an agonising wait.
Staff have also given him special permission to have his phone in school so he can see if the message comes through.

Despite there being some initial confusion after his teacher allows him to pick up the phone, Scott explains that it is his Mum on the phone.
In a heart-sinking moment, he then says: ‘They’ve emailed me.’
As he looks up and down his screen, he utters: ‘I’ve got in.’
With emotional music playing in the background, Scott walks down his school hallway and, in a rare show of emotion, starts to break down in tears.
Barely able to compose himself, he walks into Mr Burton’s office and says again: ‘I got in.’
Mr Burton is now head of the school (Picture: Channel 4)Mr Burton replies: ‘Ah, that’s fantastic news… you’ll be playing international rugby soon.
‘I’m really, really proud of you, Scott. I’m absolutely buzzing.’
As Scott wipes his tears away with a tissue, Mr Burton encourages him to ring his mum, who bursts with excitement after finding out.
She adds: ‘I’m so proud of you, Scott; well done,’ before saying she has just done her makeup, but she is now crying.
In a one-to-one with the camera, Scott explains the feeling, saying: ‘It’s just unreal. It’s just a rush of energy and such joy… I’m a Welshman. I got in!
‘It just made me feel really good about myself, obviously playing for your country, and I’m going to be playing England, Ireland and Scotland.’
‘Model pupil’, Alexa, has also been having a tough time with anxiety around exams (Picture: Tom Martin/Channel 4)Elsewhere in tonight’s episode, the now-famous school encountered every other kind of teenage drama, including friendship group arguments involving 14-year-olds Ruby and Alexa.
Viewers were also left emotional as the latter opened up about her anxiety around exams, which she was juggling alongside a turbulent home life.
Taking to social media after the latest episode concluded, viewers couldn’t help but express all possible emotions, particularly after watching ‘model student’ Alexa receive a low score in a mock test.
Comment nowAre you enjoying the new series of Educating Yorkshire?Comment Now‘I’m so lucky I didn’t have anxiety in school. I deal with it as an adult with medication and an understanding of what’s happening, but watching Alexa on #EducatingYorkshire was really sad. Can’t image that and the stresses of exams/home challenges [sic]’, wrote Xuser @LewisMac_.
There was plenty of reaction to Scott’s rugby triumph, too, after teachers scolded him for backchatting and swearing, and he opened up about reconnecting with his estranged dad and the pressures it was putting on his home situation.
‘I feel for Scott, he’s in serious need of some guidance. As a grown adult is so hard to watch [sic]’, admitted @s30531462 after teachers suggested contacting Scott’s rugby coach due to bad behaviour.
Educating Yorkshire is available to stream on Channel 4, with new episodes airing on Sundays at 8pm.
