Rumours are swirling that Millie Bobby Brown may star as Britney Spears in a film about the singer’s life.

The Stranger Things star, 21, has said several times that she’d love to play the Toxic hitmaker, and fans are now convinced that she’s dropping hints that something is in the works.

Millie has posted several photos of herself on Instagram with brand new blonde hair, sporting very Y2K outfits – strong Baby One More Time vibes – in the last few weeks.

This has led fans to point out Millie’s resemblance to a young Britney in the comments sections, with some speculating that a casting announcement could be on the way.

On Monday, Millie commented on possibly playing the part: ‘I would love nothing more than to be a part of her story. But that’s her story, and I am in full support of her bringing her story to life… how she wants to.’

‘I would want someone to bring it to life in the most beautiful way, and I’d always be open to that,’ she added to Access Hollywood.

The biopic, an adaptation of Britney’s 2023 memoir A Woman In Me, is set to be produced by Universal Studios, with Wicked director Jon M. Chu attached to direct and Marc Platt set to produce.

Fans have also read into a comment Chu made about the film to The Hollywood Reporter, speculating that his description of the themes he’s going to explore in the movie seem to point toward a child star like Millie.

He said: ‘We haven’t written the script yet, we haven’t hired a writer yet. But in this initial conception, I think it’s a lot about how we treat people, young people, stars that we think we own, women, mothers. There’s a lot of things in there that I would love to explore.’

Millie has publicly declared her desire to play the legendary pop star in a future biopic even before the memoir came out.

In a 2022 interview with Drew Barrymore, the young actress was asked if there was anything on her ‘bucket list’ as a filmmaker, and the Enola Holmes star had an answer ready.

‘I want to play a real person. I think for me, Britney,’ Millie revealed.

‘I think her story resonates with me. Growing up in the public eye. Watching videos of her, watching interviews of her when she was younger. The same thing with you!’ she added to the Scream actress.

‘I see her scramble for words and I don’t know her but when I look at pictures of her I feel I can tell her story in the right way,’ Millie went on.

But Britney herself seemed to take issue with the idea of Millie playing the role, posting a photo of an ornate door in November 22 with the caption: ‘Good news, good news!!! Still breathing … it’s funny the same two people who gave me life are the same exact 2 people who took it away … but guess what!!! I’m alive and I’m breathing again!!!

‘Yeah I know I’ve posted too much this week on Instagram … kinda fun though!!! Now that I’m breathing … I have time … it’s different!!! I like it!!!

‘I hear about people wanting to do movies about my life … dude I’m not dead!!! Although it’s pretty f**king clear they preferred me dead … I guess my family is going to lock their doors now!!!

‘Either way … I just want to say hi and share these fabulous doors!!! I did kinda post too much this week … I’m embarrassed!!! I get it … oh well!!! Have a good day!!! [sic].’

Fans in the comments below rushed to defend Millie, insisting that she didn’t mean any harm with her comments.

‘We love you Britney,’ a follower penned. ‘Also, I think Millie Bobby Brown meant it as a compliment that she wanted to play you in a movie and that she’d honor you properly, don’t be offended Queen!’

‘Millie was complimenting not wishing death. Jesus,’ another said, as one replied: ‘The only way there’s gonna be a movie about you is if you’re involved.’

Britney’s story has been one of the most discussed in celebrity history, from her rise to fame as a young teenager via The Mickey Mouse Club and her music career, to her mental health issues and controversial conservatorship – Britney has lived her life squarely in the public eye.

Millie, who was in Netflix hit Stranger Things from the age of 11 to 20, can relate to the struggles of fame coming at such a young.

‘I don’t have many friends because of who I am,’ she told Vanity Fair in their March cover story.

‘I didn’t go to school, so I don’t have the best social skills when it comes to people my own age and friendships. I struggle with that quite a bit,’ she continued.

She concluded: ‘I missed out on a few things. But I’m working through them.’

Millie has grown up fast, marrying Bon Jovi singer Jon Bongiovi’s son, Jake Bongiovi, when she was just 20 years old in 2024.

While it remains to be seen if Millie will get the chance to bring Britney’s story to life, many fans online are certainly rooting for the casting choice.
