It may be more than half a century later, but Amazon Prime Video fans can now finally watch a classic gothic TV series.

The streamer has recently added the first on-screen appearance of the legendary The Addams Family, which originally aired for two seasons from 1964 until 1966.

Based on Charles Addams’ New Yorker cartoons, the family has spawned several TV and film adaptations, including the 90s film of the same name and Netflix spin-off Wednesday with Jenna Ortega.

In the 60s show, viewers are introduced to the close-knit The Addams Family, who have supernatural abilities, as they experience culture clashes with the outside world.

The weird and wonderful cast of characters include the likes of Morticia Addams (Carolyn Jones), Wednesday Adams (Lisa Loring), Uncle Fester (Jackie Coogan) and disembodied hand, Thing.

On Reddit, users have said The Addams Family original TV show still holds up 61 years later.

Many fans have said the 60s version is their ‘favourite’ adaptation (Picture: Everett/REX/Shutterstock)

Among them is ThisPaige, who wrote: ‘I want to say I love it. Carolyn Jones as Mortica has to be my favorite and Gomez is really great too. There’s a lot of plot ideas that I could see coming back in newer adaptations like Mortica’s sister.’

Javaper agreed and said: ‘I absolutely love this show. Everything that came after is tolerable for me, but the actors in this original were spot on for as a child.’

Echoing their sentiment, Eles_Nedlyg5 shared: ‘It’s my favourite adaptation of the Addams Family. Very underrated and every actor is fabulous.’

This year, the second season of the coming-of-age thriller Wednesday is landing on Netflix.

The megahit show focuses on Wednesday Addams (Ortega) as she’s enrolled at Nevermore Academy – a private school for outcast children with supernatural powers – by her parents, Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones) and Gomez (Luis Guzman).

The plot for the follow-up has been kept under wraps, but a teaser trailer reveals that the action will once again take place at Nevermore Academy.

Joining the cast is also Lady Gaga, 38 – although the Abracadabra singer’s role has not yet been disclosed.

The internet, however, has some wild theories over who she could be playing.

On Reddit, user MuptonBossman shared their two cents and said they believed Lady Gaga had been cast as Cousin It so would not be visible under the character’s full-length blonde hair and hat costume.

They wrote: ‘Plot Twist – She’s going to play Cousin It and nobody will know it’s her.’

Lizzie888, though, had another theory: ‘This is giving me flashbacks to when she was announced in American Horror Story. I feel like we’re all expecting a dark, countess-like character but I hope she does something super unexpected.

Meanwhile, LyleLansleysMonorail hoped Lady Gaga’s role would see her interact with Jenna’s Wednesday: ‘Is she gonna do the Wednesday dance to her own song?’

When it debuted on Netflix in 2022, Wednesday quickly became the second-most watched English language show in the history of the streaming platform.

The Addams Family (1964 – 1966) is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
