Australian crime drama hailed ‘outstanding’ finally drops on completely free UK streamer
It stars Guy Pearce as a criminal lawyer-turned investigator and debt collector.

A ‘brilliant’ crime drama based on a series of novels has finally been made available to watch in full in the UK for free.
First hitting screens in 2012, Jack Irish was adapted from Peter Temple’s novel series of the same name.
Set in the Melbourne suburb of Fitzroy, it starred Guy Pearce as the titular character, a former criminal lawyer turned investigator and debt collector.
It began with three feature-length TV movies, before being turned into three six-episode TV seasons.
The story kicks off with the shocking murder of Jack’s wife after one of his clients carried out a murder-suicide instead of paying his legal bills.
Following the traumatic turn of events, Jack then pursued detective work and chasing people down for money.

‘It’s straightforward, noirish mystery starring a laconic, mostly noble, unapologetically genre-friendly gumshoe,’ it wrote.
‘Its long-suffering protagonist is as appealing as ever,’ the Guardian said.
Meanwhile, fans delivered equally glowing assessments.

‘Jack Irish manages to pack in everything that makes for great viewing: fantastic, a treasure chest of wonderful Australian actors, intriguing plots and plenty of witty humour,’ Lu_Dan shared.
‘Jack Irish is a detective show with yards of gritty, very Australian character. Jack is wryly witty, hard drinking, somewhat self-destructive, self-styled detective and part time ladies man. Played with a world worn, crusty charm, by Guy Pearce. Jack Irish and the larger than life, cast of very colourful Australian characters, really bring this series to life. It’s a very approachable watch, that’s certainly a departure from mainstream US and UK crime/mystery dramas. I say give it a go,’ another added.
This week all three seasons were released on Channel 4, with UK viewers now able to binge the series in full for free.
Pearce said he was ’emotional’ when it ended (Picure: Samir Hussein/ WireImage)Speaking to the Herald Sun in 2021, Guy described facing the bittersweet end of the series,
‘I was quite emotional about it,’ he said.
‘There was a point suddenly when I was filming where I went “hang on, this feels sad” and I think I had not even considered that because I was so excited about coming back to Australia.
‘But when I was doing scenes with Shane Jacobsen or Aaron (Pedersen) or Marta (Dusseldorp) – the team – I was going “aw, this is the last one”. We have done three films and three series now so it’s time. But still, it’s a hard one to let go of.’
Jack Irish is streaming on Channel 4.
