HBO has announced who will be playing the Weasley siblings in the upcoming Harry Potter TV show.

Taking to social media, HBO Max shared a picture of five kids who have landed the role of a lifetime as The Burrow’s smiling occupants.

Joining Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley is Tristan Harland as Fred Weasley, Gabriel Harland as George Weasley, Ruari Spooner as Percy Weasley, and Gracie Cochrane as Ginny Weasley.

Tristan played Esgar Cnutsson – the youngest son of Danish Earl Cnut – in four episodes of The Last Kingdom’s 2020 season four, alongside his brother Gabriel, who played his brother in the series too.

Meanwhile, Ruari just has one film credit to his name, starring in a short called Syncopation last year.

Gracie, who takes up the role of Harry’s future wife Ginny from Bonnie Wright, appeared in Blitz last year as a young girl in a field alongside Saoirse Ronan.

The production company explained that Charlie Weasley is ‘in Romania’ with his dragons – as he is throughout the seven films – but will be joining the cast later down the line.

Fans were ecstatic to have the promise of an on-screen Charlie in the TV show, as his part was cut from the films bar mentions of him.

‘CHARLIE IS COMING GUYS,’ commented elizabeth.s.life, while cf107 wrote: ‘We finally get an on-screen Charlie.’

Others also asked for a faithful book-version of feisty, funny Ginny Weasley after Bonnie was given little to work with in the films.

‘Just make a book accurate Ginny, please. We need THAT personality,’ said lucho.barba.

There is no mention of eldest sibling Bill Weasley, who appears in a number of the films, working as a curse-breaker at Gringotts bank and eventually marrying Fleur Delacour.

Head of the Weasley family Molly Weasley will be portrayed by The IT Crowd and Rivals’ Katherine Parkinson, while dad Arthur Weasley is yet to be announced.

Meanwhile Dominic McLaughlin is taking the role of the titular character Harry, stepping into Daniel Radcliffe’s famous shoes, having appeared alongside Game of Thrones’ Indira Varma in a Shakespearean production of Macbeth.

Hermione Granger will be played by Arabella Stanton, who is hot off the West End.

And it’s unlikely that the original Harry, Hermione and Ron – Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, or Rupert Grint – will be making cameo appearances in the HBO Max series, given their very public criticism of author JK Rowling’s stance on transgender rights, which has sparked criticism of the new TV adaptation.

While some actors have sworn off ever considering a role given the writer’s opinions, others have not.

Hagrid will be played by Hot Fuzz actor Nick Frost, while other famous stars include John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore; Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Lovesick star Johnny Flynn as Lucius Malfoy; Bel Powey as Petunia Dursley; The Crown’s Bertie Carvel as Minister for Magic Cornelius Fudge; and Game of Thrones star Anton Lesser as wandmaker Ollivander.

Filming kicked off on July 14 at Warner Bros. Studios in Leavesden, with the first season set to focus on the first book Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.

The series has been confirmed for a 2027 release window, which will mark 16 years since the final movie Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part Two was released in cinemas.
