Netflix viewers are proceeding with caution after the sequel trailer for a beloved 90s comedy was released.

In 1996 the sports comedy film Happy Gilmore hit screens.

Starring Adam Sandler in the title role, it followed a failed ice hockey player who discovered a talent for golf when chasing money to stop the foreclosure of his grandmother’s house.

While he finds success in paid tournaments, he also causes a stir for his skill and unconventional behaviour.

Although the film was met with mixed reviews from critics, it was a commercial success and earned $41.2 million (£31.6 million) against a $12 million (£9.2 million) budget.

In the years since it’s also developed a cult following, with fans calling it an ‘absolute classic’ and even their ‘favourite movie of all time’.

Now, nearly 30 years on, Happy is making a comeback, with the long-awaited sequel coming on July 25.

It will see Sandler, Julie Bowen, Allen Covert, Dennis Dugan, Christopher McDonald and Ben Stiller all reprise their roles while a string of professional golfers, Eminem and Travis Kelce will also make cameos.

This week the movie’s trailer was released and shows Happy coming out of retirement and continuing to shake the golf world up – taking to the green in a jersey and Timberlands.

However, he is somewhat intimated coming up against his new competition.

Although many have expressed their excitement over the upcoming release, others are also slightly nervous and want it to live up to expectations.

‘Please for the love of God. I hope they kept it comedic. The trailer makes it look like it’s going to be a drama,’ massapin9293 commented on YouTube.

‘Didn’t even get a chuckle out of me and the first movie is one of my all-time favourite comedies,’ @JokesterSCR shared.

‘This is such a cash grab but anyone who watched his original films wants to go back to that happy place,’ @Websitedr wrote.

‘Better be good Netflix or I’m cancelling,’ @sgtdezy1780 added.

Meanwhile @jackchain2862 said it ‘looked like a movie that doesn’t need to happen’.

However, @kyegutierrez25 was ‘genuinely excited to relive some nostalgia’ and others were left ‘laughing and in tears reliving the nostalgia’.

During an appearance on The Tonight Show last year, Sandler said the following about the sequel: ‘We worked hard on the script. We didn’t want to let anybody down. People have been asking me for a long time. We’re really excited about it. We wrote our asses off. So many of the golfers are being nice and will be a part of it.’

Happy Gilmore 2 will be streaming from July 25 on Netflix.
