Netflix’s new $320,000,000 blockbuster branded ‘worst film of the year’
It's been described as 'a bland Millie Bobby Brown vehicle'.

Despite the fact that Netflix’s The Electric State is the streamer’s most expensive original movie so far – it’s already been savagely branded ‘the worst film of the year.’
The streamer spent a reported $320million (£266m) on the movie, directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, with the Marvel filmmakers having worked for over seven years to bring their version of the story to the screen.
New footage shows Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown, 21, as Michelle, an orphaned teenager, teaming up with Chris Pratt’s drifter Keats on a mission to find her missing younger brother in the dangerous ‘exclusion zone’ following a robot war in the film’s retro-futuristic take on the 90s.
The Electric State recently had its world premiere in Hollywood, and the reviews are coming in hot and heavy.
The film landed a debut Rotten Tomatoes score of just 10% from its first 10 reviews, before jumping to 18%.

Variety describes the sci-fi comedy as ‘a bland Millie Bobby Brown vehicle’ and argues that ‘the filmmakers have diluted the source material, showing a clear lack of interest in making their creation just as haunting, searing and satisfying as the original product.’

While The Guardian argues: ‘There’s no soul, no originality, just a great big multicolour wedge of digital content.’
It was recently reported that streaming giant is likely to have high hopes for The Electric State as the Russos were behind one of the streamer’s most-watched films of all time in The Gray Man in 2022.

Fans naturally came to social media to share their two cents on the film with Twitter/X user TomCJL writing: ‘No, #TheElectricState is absolutely not the disaster some are making it out to be. And no, it isn’t a perfect movie either. And no, The Russo’s career isn’t in trouble. It’s a fine, fun family road trip adventure that is your middle of the road flick for a rainy Friday night.’
@Ramasscreen added: ‘THE ELECTRIC STATE was fine… Just okay. Between the “mid” battles & the forced emotional beats, the movie didn’t really do all that much for me. But as a lifelong fan of OASIS, I did appreciate the piano-orchestral rendition of “Wonderwall” song at the end.’
@joeyjoe penned: ‘If #TheElectricState is a misfire, at least its an interesting one with engaging visuals, exciting action sequences and a theme that’s on point. If only it had the soul to match its ambition.’
