Lego and castles have been a popular double act since the inception of the famous plastic construction toys. For decades there have been sets with various invented designs but more recently, as building with Lego has become increasingly appealing to adults, there’s been models based on famous fictional ones, like the Disney Castle and Harry Potter’s Hogwarts, as well as the real-life Himeji Castle in Japan.
This April will see the release of a brand new Disney castle that has never been recreated at this scale in Lego before: the unnamed abode of the Beast from the iconic animated and live action films.
There have been much smaller and cheaper versions released before, aimed purely at kids, but this one is meant for adults, as it’s composed of 2,916 pieces, has a height of 53cm, and sports a similarly sizeable price tag.
The castle is 33cm wide and 15cm deep, four separate levels and multiple rooms. There’s a ballroom with a spinning floor, to simulate Belle and the Beast dancing; a dining room with a table and spinning platters; and a tower room with the all-important enchanted rose.
The grand staircase section is removable and the décor is all on point, with furniture and wall paintings that are filled with Easter eggs from the films that every fan will recognise.
Can you spot all the references? (Lego)You also get 10 characters to explore the castle with, including minifigures of Belle, the Beast, Gaston, LeFou, and Maurice. There’s also brick-built versions of Lumière, Fifi, Cogsworth, Chip, and Mrs Potts characters – which are not the easiest characters to recreate in Lego but have come out very well here.
It looks great, with lots of clever details and unusual building techniques, but naturally it’s not cheap and comes in it at £239.99 – although that’s actually a little less than might have been imagined, given the size and Disney licence.
Set #43263 will be available from April 4, at the Lego website and from official Lego stores. Although if you’re a Lego Insider, which only requires a free sign-up, you can get it from April 1.
The original Disney Castle is still available from the Lego website, for £344.99, as well as the Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ Cottage and various mini-sized castle sets for just £34.99.
