In the wake of Netflix dropping what many critics have called ‘TV perfection’, Adolescence fans have slowly started to uncover the show’s several hidden messages.

Directed by Philip Barantini and starring Stephen Graham, Ashley Walters and Erin Doherty, the four-part crime series is already being tipped for Bafta success after raking in more than 24million views.

Following its release, viewers were stunned to learn the true meanings of the emojis discussed in Episode 2, from red pills to 100 signs and the bean emoji.

A devastating hidden detail at the end of the series after Graham breaks down in his son’s room in Episode 4 also rocked fans of the show.

But now, a psychologist has revealed another wild hidden meaning after Owen Cooper’s character, Jamie Miller, was offered only half of a sandwich by psychologist Briony (Doherty) in the show’s mesmerising Episode 3.

The third episode has proved to be a major talking point despite it taking place almost entirely in one room at a psychiatric facility.

Rather simply, it shows a one-on-one conversation between Jamie and Briony, a psychologist who’s been assigned to this case.

As the episode unfolds, their exchanges flit between being friendly and terrifying, as Jamie attempts to try and intimidate Briony during several heated moments.

At the end of their discussion, Briony reveals that this was their last session, much to Jamie’s devastation.

As he leaves, he pleads with Briony to say whether or not she liked him as a person, and as he leaves the room, the psychologist looks visibly shaken.

Despite the episode receiving rave reviews, viewers might have missed a small detail towards the start when Briony offers Jamie half of her sandwich.

Although it might seem like such a minor plot point, an expert has explained why she thinks it is so significant and why the fact it is half holds so much value.

Discussing how Briony decides to give Jamie a hot chocolate with marshmallows as well, psychologist Dannielle Haig has claimed it is for behavioural reasons.

Speaking to Tyla, she said: ‘The half-sandwich, particularly the fact that it contains something Jamie dislikes, could be a way of testing his response.

‘Does he push it away? Does he eat it to be polite? Does he comment on it? These reactions provide insight into his personality.

‘If he simply tolerates it without complaint, it may suggest a history of feeling powerless and being accustomed to having things done to him rather than for him.’

‘It’s a clever way of gauging how Jamie sees himself in relation to authority figures and whether he feels able to assert his own needs.’

Haig also explained how everything in a psychological assessment is ‘deliberate’ and a small action can tell you ‘a great deal about a person’s mindset’.

Even from the hot chocolate, the psychologist said it is a ‘comforting, almost maternal offering’ that is ‘associated with warmth, safety, and childhood, a stark contrast to the harsh reality of Jamie’s situation’ to help him open up.

Yesterday, it was revealed that Netflix bosses could be looking to capitalise on the show’s success.

‘Execs are thrilled by the results and acclaim for Adolescence. It’s seen as a format that can run and run, at least to a second series if not further, as it could take in a different teen issue each series,’ a TV source told The Sun.

They continued: ‘The topic has resonated with viewers because it taps into parents biggest fear and there’s plenty of scope for more in the same vein.

‘Stylistically, the one-take creative approach could become the hallmark of the series. It’s one of the aspects which has got everyone talking.’

Netflix is no stranger to creating anthology series under the same umbrella – and Adolescence could follow that lead.

Adolescence is available to stream on Netflix.
