Viewers are afraid of approaching their neighbours after watching a thriller with a disturbingly ‘good’ plot.

Last night, the first episode of suburbia drama The Feud aired on Channel 5 and is available on the broadcaster’s free streaming platform.

Starring Jill Halfpenny and Rupert Penry-Jones as couple, Emma and John, the five-parter follows their idyllic family life implodes after they decide to add a kitchen extension to their home.

Emma and John’s once friendly neighbours, including Sonia (Amy Nuttall), Alan (Ray Fearon) and Barbara (Tessa Peake-Jones), turn nasty when their planning application is submitted, setting in motion events that have dark consequences for the entire neighbourhood.

The synopsis adds: ‘Laced with menace, The Feud reveals how Emma’s aspirational dream turns sharply into obsession, paranoia, and fear.’

The following episodes will air tonight, tomorrow, Monday and Tuesday, when they will also be added to streamer Channel 5.

On X, viewers are desperate for their next The Feud fix, with @RachelSargeant3 saying: ‘I rather enjoyed the first episode. Good cast of dodgy characters and a brisk pace. The flashforward opener was a great hook. #thefeud.’

Echoing their sentiment, @Roz4luv commented: ‘Just watched the first episode of #thefeud. My goodness, what a great cast! Really enjoyed it. Such a nice change from detective and police dramas.’

@nannyloulou shared: ‘Oof!…#TheFeud right up my street! I thought I was going to like Jill Halfpenny’s character but I don’t. Great cast. This is gonna be a goody.’

@BritishBC also added: ‘#TheFeud on @channel5_tv looking great already. A great 6-parter coming.’

Others said The Feud had made them think twice about their own living arrangements.

Among them was @KathrynAnneTM, who said: ‘This is why you should never get to pally with your neighbours #TheFeud’

@StevenRoutledg7 added: ‘Is suburbia always this ghastly #thefeud.’

Teasing what’s to come, The Feud actor Jill, 49, said the drama was ‘the stuff of nightmares.’

She said: ‘The Feud is a tense thriller. No one is being honest about what they’re doing or how they’re feeling, which makes for exciting television. Even my character Emma, who feels she’s deeply honest, still lies.

‘It’s a scenario we can all relate to, most people have WhatsApp groups, and most people have experienced neighbours having work done to their house. But, where The Feud takes us is the stuff of nightmares.’

The Feud is not the only thriller gripping Channel 5 viewers.

They have also been binge-watching Kevin Bacon’s three-season horror-thriller, The Following, which was recently added to the platform.

The three-season US show, which ran from 2013 to 2015, revolves around former FBI agent Ryan Hardy (Kevin) in pursuit of the charismatic serial killer, Joe Carroll (James Purefoy).

The Feud continues tonight on Channel 5 at 9pm.
