Where is thriller Protection filmed? All the ITV crime drama filming locations
The 'best crime drama in years' continues tonight.
ITV viewers have rushed to binge a new British series this week that some have called ‘the best crime drama in years’.
Premiering on Sunday night, Protection stars Siobhan Finneran (Benidorm, Downton Abbey, Happy Valley) as DI Liz Nyles, an officer for the UK’s Protected Persons Service.
Although she’s been tasked with keeping gangster-turned-informant Jimmy McLennan and his wife and daughter safe, things take a turn after the couple are murdered at a safe house.
At the same time as tackling her hugely stressful profession, Liz is also concerned her affair with married DS Paul Brandice (Barry Ward) is simply occurring due to his desire to get information about the witnesses rather than any interest in her.
The six-part series – which was inspired by a real-life witness protection officer – was filmed across the Liverpool City region.
Here’s everything we know about the locations seen on screen.

Created by Kris Mrksa, the writer of White House Farm and No Escape, it follows single mum Liz as she navigates a ‘difficult divorce and a sick father’ while finding herself ‘at the heart of a security breach within her witness protection unit’.
‘Professionally compromised by a secret affair with a colleague, she is determined to uncover the true source of corruption within the police. Liz will stop at nothing to redeem herself, the reputation of her lover, and to keep her witnesses and her own family safe. Even if it means breaking all the rules. This is the story of a tough, but increasingly isolated and under suspicion police officer, as she is pulled into a dangerous conspiracy where nothing is as it seems,’ it added.
Where is Protection filmed? Filming took place at a range of locations across the North West (Picture: David Tarling/ ITV)Filming on the series took place from July to September 2023 in the North West of England in Liverpool, Knowsley, Wirral, Sefton and Runcorn.
The following were some of the locations used for the show: Olive Mount Community Centre, Edgewell Drive, Score Lane, Childwall, Western Drive and Cressington in Liverpool.
Others were Runcorn Shopping City, Formby Point Caravan Park, Wavertree Police Station, Liverpool Hope University, Princes Docks, Arrowe Park Hospital, Delamere Forest and All Saints Church.
Speaking about the filming locations, Siobhan shared: ‘I loved filming in Liverpool, it’s a great place to potter about and look at buildings.’
Who else stars in Protection?Protection also stars Nadine Marshall (Sherwood, Trigger Point) and Katherine Kelly (Mr Bates vs The Post Office, The Long Shadow), as well as Barry Ward (Bad Sisters) and Chaneil Kular (Sex Education).
