Lord of the Rings fans will be delighted by the latest announcement from Amazon Prime Video.

The streaming giant has confirmed The Rings of Power, with its whopping $1billion budget, is returning for a third season with the next instalment of the fantasy epic already in pre-production at its new Shepperton Studios home.

‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power continues to captivate audiences worldwide, and we’re thrilled that a third season is underway,’ said Amazon MGM Studios’ head of television, Vernon Sanders.

Although a lot of details about the upcoming series are under wraps, he did promise to delve ‘even deeper’ into the history of J.R.R Tolkien’s world.

‘The creative team has an extraordinary vision of what’s to come with stories that have left us enchanted and enthralled,’ Sanders added.

‘We look forward to continuing this epic journey, for our global customers, delving even deeper into the legendary tales that shaped Middle-earth.’

Prime has also confirmed a trio of directors for the new season with Charlotte Brändström, who served as co-executive producer and directed multiple episodes in the first two runs, returning as executive producer and director for the third season.

Away from Middle Earth, Brändström has worked on the likes of Shōgun, The Outsider and The Witcher.

She’ll be joined by returning director Sanaa Hamri (Empire and The Wheel of Time), who helmed several episodes in season two.

Meanwhile, veteran director Stefan Schwartz, who has worked on the likes of Luther, The Boys and The Walking Dead, is marking his first involvement with the series.

Each director is set to oversee multiple episodes in the upcoming season.

The major Prime production (from showrunners J. D. Payne and Patrick McKay) has already been touted as one of the ‘most expensive shows ever made’ with an eye-watering price tag of over a reported $1 billion.

That’s an equivalent to around £760 million across all five seasons, although last year there were reports the costs may have already exceeded that figure.

Unfortunately, some viewers were left underwhelmed by 2022’s season one, branding it a ‘disappointment’ despite its epic scale and the huge amount of money plugged into it.

Thankfully, that seemed to change with the second season, as fans hailed the early episodes a ‘vast improvement’.

X user @kaiyashunyata wrote: ‘Season two of #TheRingsOfPower is a mighty return to middle-earth. balancing a tighter narrative with fantastic spectacle and performances, this is undeniably the best fantasy show of the year.’

Echoing their sentiment, @FrewFilm raved: ‘I wasn’t a fan of #TheRingsOfPower’s first chapter, but Season 2 is a VAST improvement. I’m already excited to go back to Middle-earth.’

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
