Previous Page Next PageCalling all dark comedy lovers, the Amazon Prime series Deadloch has your name written all over it.
Fronted by Australian actress Kate Box and New Zealand star Madeleine Sami, an eight-episode mini-series has hit the streamer, and if its 100% score on Rotton Tomatoes is anything to go by, it’s everything you could want in a murder mystery.
Flocking to the rating website and social media to share their reviews, fans have presented a compelling case as to why this should be your next watch.
But before we get into that, let’s start with the obvious: explaining what Deadloch is and its storyline.
The Australian series – first released in 2023 – is set in the sleepy seaside town of Hamlet and, at first, resembles the ITV drama Broadchurch.
That’s a comparison the creators, Kate McCartney and Kate McLennan don’t mind you making as they themselves described it to The Guardian as ‘Broadchurch but with satire’.
Meet Detective Eddie Redcliffe (Picture: Amazon/Everett/REX/Shutterstock)Much like the David Tennant-fronted show, Deadloch follows two detectives as they work together to solve a murder that left the town shocked. Through twists and turns, the townspeople’s secrets are uncovered, and the killer is finally revealed.
But where Broadchurch was full of serious emotion, Deadloch is the complete opposite.
The two female detectives, Detective Eddie Redcliffe (Sami) and Senior Sergeant Dulcie Collins (Box) are the complete opposite of each other; there’s a giggle-worthy line at every turn, and while you’ll probably still need tissues to wipe your tears, they won’t be from sadness.
Taking to Rotten Tomatoes, critic James Field declared: ‘This is one of the funniest and best-written cop dramas we’ve had in an ugly dog’s age, and I’ve already got my fingers crossed for a second season.’
Sarah Ward wrote: ‘With whip-smart writing, the Australian series is intelligent, hilarious, and all-round cracking as a whodunnit-style noir drama and as a comedy alike — and one of the streaming highlights of the year.’
And her partner in solving crime, Senior Sergeant Dulcie Collins (Picture: Amazon/Everett/REX/Shutterstock)‘Deadloch is better than any comedy-murder series has any right being. It’s great at creating a fantastic ensemble cast even outside of its leads, and the show grapples with misogyny in interesting ways that don’t come off as preachy,’ Paul Tassi added.
Meanwhile, over on Google, the reviews continued with one fan, Tracy, calling it a ‘hidden gem’ that was ‘surprisingly funny’ and ‘endearing’.
Admitting she had no idea who the main actors were, she loved the onscreen chemistry of Kate and Madeleine, as well as the supporting cast, which includes Nina Oyama, Tom Ballard and Alicia Gardiner.
Amruta also shared their opinion, declaring it ‘one of the best dark comedies I have watched in a long time’ and ‘absolute treasure of the year’.
‘Madeleine Sami who plays the detective from Darwin is hysterically funnyand pure genius with her comedic timing. I hope they renew it for at least another season,’ they added.
The series has been renewed for a second season, with filming having begun in September (Picture: Amazon/Everett/REX/Shutterstock)The show is currently one of Amazon Prime’s top-rated shows in more than 165 countries, with over 260 reviews, 85% of which are five stars, meaning the streamer has given it an overall 4.6 out of five-star rating.
So, with the reviews clearly having convinced you to watch, it’s only natural you’d want to know whether there will be another season of the show and the good news is that in June 2024, Amazon confirmed they had renewed the series with both Sami and Box reprising their roles.
