After months of speculation, the BBC has officially recommissioned The Capture for a third season.

The tense mystery thriller has been a hit with viewers and critics with a fresh Rotten Tomatoes score of 96%, and fans have been waiting for some good news since the second season first started in August 2022.

It’s been well over two years since series two ended, and finally, a new six episode run is in the works from BAFTA-winning Ben Chanan.

Lead star Holliday Granger will return as DCI Rachel Carey (Holliday), who is part of the Homicide and Serious Crime Command. She will be joined by Kaos star Killian Scott in a ‘pivotal role’.

The new season is set 12 months after Rachel broadcast a live deepfake of a government minister to the nation which exposed the government’s video manipulation programme, Correction.

Now the head of SO15 while an inquiry is underway, Rachel plans to regain the public’s trust with a new surveillance technology aka the Operation Veritas camera system.

The synopsis continues: ‘And then it happens: a brutal and exceptionally well-coordinated act of terror aimed right at the heart of the British establishment that leaves behind just one witness.

‘The more Carey investigates, the deeper she is drawn into an unfolding geopolitical crisis that infects the British political establishment, the security services, and the media.

‘The conspiracy reaches deep into the State, but just who is pulling the strings? Caught in an increasingly violent situation, and with few allies left to trust, what sacrifices will Carey be willing to make?’

Indira Varma will return as BBC Newsnight presenter Khadija Khan as well as Ben Miles as Danny Hart, Lia Williams as Gemma Garland.

Ginny Holder, Ron Perlman, Frank Napier, Nigel Lindsay, Tessa Wong and Daisy Waterstone also return alongside fresh cast members Joe Dempsie, Andrew Buchan, Hugh Quarshie and Amanda Drew.

Ben has teased that season three puts ‘Carey at the heart of the conspiracy’. And Holliday shared: ‘I’m thrilled to be joining The Capture team once more for series three. Ben Chanan’s scripts are as electrifying as ever and I’m excited to be stepping back into ‘Commander’ Rachel Carey’s world. (Spoiler alert!)’

Killian called Ben’s script ‘authentic and immensely captivating’ and director of BBC Dram Lindsay Salt said season three will ‘dazzle and terrify you in equal measure.’

Fans have long been excited by the possibility of more episodes to come.

‘So happy it’s coming back it’s such a great series,’ wrote @angelathompson5, while @terrettcorey added: ‘This is exciting! Loved S2 ????’

The Capture first aired in 2019, as the intelligence and surveillance drama tackled the world of fake news and deepfake technology.

There have long been whispers of another season. After the second series in 2022, Holliday gave some hope for a third series as she revealed her intrigue over where the story will go.

‘It goes on such a journey from the beginning, Carey and the plot,’ she told Radio Times magazine.

‘It goes on such a massive journey throughout season two that where we’re left, the world and Correction as we leave it at the end, I want to know what happens next.’

She admitted she would ‘love to watch season three’, adding: ‘I’d love to know where Carey went.’

Even before the second run had finished airing, fans were clamouring for a comeback – and now their wish is coming true.

‘Me getting a petition signed so we can get a season three #TheCapture,’ one fan said at the time.

‘#TheCapture is just the best drama. Please be a series three @BBCOne,’ pleaded a second viewer on X.

The Capture is available to stream on Netflix.
