Frasier fans left panicked after Channel 4 threatens to retaliate with ‘cut’

Frasier fans have had quite the scare after Channel 4 responded to Donald Trump’s new tariffs with a threat of its own.

The US President has announced a baseline 10% tariff (tax on imported goods) across the globe, with an additional amount added to certain countries the administration views as having an unbalanced trade relationship.

Although the UK managed to get away with just the baseline tariff, this will still impact businesses and, as a result, the general public with potentially higher prices in daily life.

And Channel 4 wasted no time hitting back, writing in a new post on Threads: ‘As retaliation for the Tariffs we will now be showing any American made TV show without the last five minutes.

‘Good luck finding out how Frasier got out of that one.’

Of course, maths whizzes will notice that removing five minutes from the 20-minute-long episodes of the 90s sitcom would be a 25% cut.

As well as being available to watch in its entirety online, Channel 4 also does daily re-runs.

And Frasier is not the only US show that is under threat, with shows like Cheers, Everyone Loves Raymond and The West Wing also a regular part of the Channel 4 schedule.

Some shared their genuine fear that Channel 4 might actually go through with it.

‘Unm this actually does nothing to the US, and p****s off the British viewer,’ @whata_cat_o_strophe wrote.

And were happy to throw other shows under the bus as @rosmontgomerie wrote: ‘Leave Frasier alone – please cancel Raymond instead.’

‘You rendered the whole series unwatchable with one petty threat,’ carrie_smattick shared.

‘Talk about an own goal flower! Hit the enemy not the home!’ mjphotography85 said. ‘Absolutely diabolical,’ pixels_and_programming added.

‘*ashen white faced Frasier, stares impolitely* “Niles, I..*episode ends*”‘ @sysonator re-enacted.

Although there were plenty of people happy to support the initiative as well.

‘Tough, but fair,’ @executivecutie said.

‘Can we just not show trump or Elon on any channel! That would be great,’ @t_m_faulkner_author asked.

‘As an American who can only watch the country smolder from all corners, I support this,’ @irishbeartx posted.

‘Perfect and I won’t watch the 5 minutes you don’t show. Solidarity brothers and sisters,’ @jaygee declared.

There was a reboot in 2023 that was quickly cancelled (Picture: Channel 4)

‘Don’t forget to remove the recaps at the start of the next episode,’ @greatmerman recommended.

Frasier is a Cheers spin-off which aired from 1993 to 2004 and followed Kelsey Grammer’s titular radio psychiatrist as he returned to his hometown of Seattle where he reunites with brother Niles (David Hyde Pierce) and their dad, Martin (John Mahoney).

The show rebooted in 2023 on Paramount Plus but after only two seasons it was cancelled at the start of the year after receiving poor reviews from fans and critics.

Kelsey, who reprised his role aged 70, remains optimistic that the reboot could find a new home.

‘‘There’s a better home for it,’ he insisted. ‘I mean, obviously, they didn’t really promote or spend much time on it.

‘The fellow that worked at Paramount+ when we first sold the show there left, and so it fell into their laps, the next administration, without having any real conscious and what to do with it.

‘So I think they gave it a good try, but they weren’t particularly passionate about the project,’ he said in a recent interview with the New York Post.

He added: ‘We’ll end up somewhere where people are passionate about it. [Cheers star] Ted [Danson] and I might visit actually something together.’

All episodes of Frasier are available to stream on Channel 4.
