Karate Kid star Jackie Chan is ready to get the whole gang back together after returning to the franchise after 15 years.

Karate Kid: Legends follows Li Fong (Ben Wang), a young boy under Mr Han’s mentorship. But when tragedy strikes his family, he moves to New York with his mother to start again – only to immediately run into trouble and need more help than ever to save the people he loves.

The film sees the return of not only Mr Han (Jackie) for the first time since 2010 (in which he mentored a bullied kid Dre Parker played by Jaden Smith) but sees him unite with the original Karate Kid legend, Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio).

For fans of the long-running franchise (who got to check in with Daniel during the Netflix series Cobra Kai), it’s a movie of epic proportions which brings together the old and new.

And Jackie already has grand plans for the future of the franchise, as he told Metro.

‘Who can say what’s after Legends, it depends on the writer. Certainly, I think Karate Kid Legends 3  – Ben, me, Ralph, Jaden [Smith as a] teacher and guru,’ he shared with excitement.

This is especially exciting considering plans for a sequel to The Karate Kid never came to fruition despite years of rumours. So, all hope is not lost yet to see Mr Han and Dre together on screen again.

And he is not the only one who would be ready to commit himself to future movies.

‘I’ve learned one thing. Never say never in this franchise. It’s so beloved. Cobra Kai taught me that there are more stories to grow from this universe.

‘I describe this movie as another ecosystem in the grand universe. It has its own feel to it, its own fresh take, its own new protagonist that we root for, but it’s still connected with the same themes.

‘To me, having Daniel LaRusso in this film was about paying his legacy forward,’ Ralph explained.

He then added: ‘I’ll always be open minded to to what another chapter may be. Will there be an Endgame? I’m sure at some point. Let me wheel me in. It’s nice to be on the positive side of things in a world is not always positive.’

For Jackie, who has made his name in action cinema in an acclaimed career spanning over five decades, even being a part of this franchise for so long has been ‘a dream come true.’

‘Even the first one, I just don’t believe… why hire me? Because when I was young I watched his first Karate Kid. At that time I was very depressed because I was a stuntman, nobody hired me. [I had] no job. I wanted to give up training.

‘Suddenly I see Karate Kid and wow, it brings my confidence back. I’m training, training, training. At that time I hated [Ralph]. I thought “why not invite me to become a Karate Kid”. [Then] one day Will Smith call: “I want to hire you as an Asian Miyagi”. I said “Can I do it? Okay yes.”.

‘Then, unbelievable, 15 years later I get to work with [Ralph]. When I was on the set I see him, “wow that’s Daniel, I watched his films growing up”. Yeah it’s a dream come true for me.’

For Ben, he hasn’t underestimated just what an honour it is to be sharing the screen with two… well… legends.

The new Hunger Games star reflected: ‘What impresses me to no end is their enthusiasm and their energy for filmmaking [and] for this franchise, for these characters.

‘Jackie’s been doing movies since he was six and a half years old. He’s done two thousand movies and still every single day comes to set with the same energy that I went to my first ever day.

‘Everything is interesting, everything is new, everything is something that I want to sink my teeth into. To see how much passion that they continue to have for making movies, both of them. It lights a fire under my ass too.

Karate Kid: Legends arrives in UK cinemas on May 28, 2025.
