Joel Dommett bluntly admits he wants to replace Gino D’Acampo on ‘best TV show’

Joel Dommett has his eyes firmly set on one of Gino D’Acampo’s TV shows.

He is currently the presenter on The Masked Singer and I’m a Celebrity: Unpacked, but Dommett is up for adding another programme to his roster.

Rather than wanting to road trip with Gordon Ramsay and Fred Sirieix, or cook on This Morning, the 39-year-old is after a bit of the Family Fortunes action.

Pre-filmed episodes of Family Fortunes will no longer be aired, as current presenter D’Acampo is facing accusations of inappropriate and intimidating behaviour. D’Acampo has ‘firmly denied’ the allegations, and said they are ‘deeply upsetting’.

This has led to Dommett deciphering there could be a job up for grabs soon. Although, the channel has not yet confirmed its official plans for the show’s future.

‘Now Gino D’Acampo is gone, maybe I’ve got the chance to slide in. I’ve been waiting for that,’ Dommett admitted on the Always Be Comedy podcast.

If there are no fans of the ITV game show in a room, then you can be sure that Dommett is elsewhere: ‘Honestly, Family Fortunes for me is the best show on telly and I know people will say, ‘What are you talking about?’. The perfect format is where the right answer or wrong answer are both satisfying, but that’s so hard to achieve.’

In the series, two families compete against each other, and both try to guess the most popular answers to survey questions that were previously put to a large group of people. The family with the most correct responses wins a cash prize.

The show began in the UK in 1980 and has seen multiple men take the reigns. Bob Monkhouse, Max Bygraves, Les Dennis, and Andy Collins all had their time before it ended in 2002. Although, viewers didn’t completely go without the format – Vernon Kay presented an All-Stars version from 2006 to 2015. When it returned in 2020 it was D’Acampo at the helm, and two series have aired with him at the forefront.

If Dommett was given the chance to take the lead then he’d be taking inspiration from the American version, Family Feud, which began in 1976.

‘I really think Family Feud, the American version, is the best telly show in the world,’ he stated.

‘So I would love to do the UK gig, but I would turn it into a different show.

‘The American one leads you down a fun garden path with every answer, so when they say “name a race”, they want you to say “the 100 metres” or “a heptathlon”, but someone says “Chinese people” and everyone laughs. That’s what you need in it!’

Dommett could have some time on his hands to take over Family Fortunes as it’s reported the BBC is undecided on whether to commission the reboot of Survivor for a second season.
