A Bafta-nominated movie with a score of 97% on Rotten Tomatoes is finally coming to Netflix—and it’s one you need to watch.

However, this drama and coming-of-age flick soon becomes a very real and honest portrayal of consent, as Tara (McKenna-Bruce) grapples with peer pressure to lose her virginity and the emotions that follow.

McKenna-Bruce, who first found fame as a child in Tracy Beaker Returns, was especially praised for her ‘transfixing’ performance conveying the reality of how UK drinking and sex culture affects teens.

How to Have Sex also hit audiences hard thanks to its sobering depiction of female adolescence and first-time sexual experiences for a post-#MeToo generation.

Taking to Rotten Tomatoes, Carla Monfort of Espinof wrote that the movie ‘provides a fresh and at the same time forceful perspective on a subject that we have already seen many times in the cinema.’

‘A clever and fundamentally empathetic story of people getting their first taste of freedom and becoming frightened by what that taste suggests about the future,’ added Calum Cooper of Cinerama Film.

‘It can be a difficult watch at times, but in its short runtime of just 91 minutes, it manages to confront its audience with important questions about sexual consent in a very real way,’ said Stefan Pape of Common Sense media.

How to Have Sex was made on a budget of $1.2million (£954k), with filming taking place on location in Malia, Crete, over two months from September 2021.
