If raucous college parties and cameos from Charli XCX sounds like your idea of a good time, you need to check out Amazon Prime’s ‘show of the summer’.

Since its release on May 15, Overcompensating, a comedy drama created by and starring Benito Skinner, has found a loyal fanbase online, so far earning a 92% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The show follows Benn (Benito), a closeted former football player who moves to a new town for college and embraces the person he was always meant to be… eventually.

During Benn’s voyage of self-discovery, viewers can expect to see some dodgy hookups, crazy partying and sex-filled drama for eight episodes.

Taking to social media, fans have praised the show’s storyline and demanded a second series.

‘As someone who also didn’t come out till college, not only is this show highly relatable, but feels made just for me. 90’s girls & gays this is for us. (Side note, this show pairs nicely with a screwdriver or 2). @PrimeVideo.’

@LinkachuHQ said: ‘Just finished watching Overcompensating and I’m gonna need a Season 2 and at least 10-12 episodes IMMEDIATELY.’

@AngelHuracha also wrote: ‘Can’t recommend #Overcompensating enough. Lil’ Benito Skinner did that. That scene in Episode 5. ???? Holmes for Best Supporting Actress #Emmys now. I need Season 2 ASAP.’

Another reason to tune into the series, which features White Lotus season 2 star Adam DiMarco, is to see Charli XCX’s cameo as she performs at one of the college parties.

Speaking to IndieWire, Benito spoke about the singer’s involvement in the series.

He said: ‘I feel like she was a part of the college experience when I was in college, and is a part of it [still] now for people.

‘She makes the party songs, and she makes really emotional songs, so I feel like both of that is in the show.’”

It appears it’s not just viewers who are fans of the show, with many critics praising its unique point of view.

A critic at the Guardian described the series as ‘an exquisite frat bro orgy of shirt-ripping, chest-thumping … and self-love.’

Meanwhile, a reviewer for the New York Times said: ‘Benito Skinner’s Prime Video series about a closeted jock starts off as a satire of toxic masculinity—and lands somewhere surprisingly sweet.’

Overcompensating is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video.
