New Lego Lord Of The Rings set is a beautiful hole in the ground

A new Lego set, that recreates Bag End and the rest of The Shire, has been announced, with Lord of the Rings star Sean Astin appearing in a new mini-film.
The Fellowship of the Ring movie will be 25 years old next year, which is kind of terrifying, but it explains why all the more recent Lego sets based on The Lord Of The Rings have been giant-sized ones aimed at adults.
The the Rivendell one is still regarded as one of the best adult Lego sets around, while the Barad-dûr one (the tower with the eye of Sauron on top) is equally great. And now there’s another to add to the list, although this one depicts a more friendly and humble part of Middle-earth.
The Lord of the Rings: The Shire recreates the whole of Bag End in Lego, as well as various parts of Bilbo’s birthday celebration, including Gandalf and his horse and cart, and the firework dragon.
The set is made up of 2,017 Lego pieces and is 20cm tall and 45cm wide, depending on how you arrange it. Bilbo’s hobbit-hole has the iconic round door and a full interior, while his eleventy-first birthday celebrations include a tent, a birthday cake, and a stage.
There’re some clever action features too, including turning a burning letter into the One Ring and making Bilbo disappear onstage. There are also interchangeable heads for Merry and Pippin, for before and after they set off the dragon firework.

To promote the new set, Lego has got Sean Astin, who played Samwise Gamgee in The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy, to appear in a new mini-film detailing the model.
The set is actually the cheapest of the three, at half the price of Rivendell. Although cheap is never really the word to use with Lego and it’ll still set you back £299.99.
It’ll become available on April 5, via Lego stores and the Lego website, or you can get it from April 2 if you’re a Lego Insider, which only requires a free sign-up.
As a bonus, if you buy it between April 2 and 8 you’ll get an exclusive free set featuring Sméagol (who would go on to become Gollum) and Déagol when they first found the One Ring – which is a really neat little model and won’t be available except as a gift with purchase.
On top of that, Lego designer Kenyon Andrew Bradley will be at the Lego store in Leicester Square, London on Saturday, April 5 between 10am and 12pm – if you want to get your set signed by the man that designed it.
