Previous Page Next PageScott Mills was forced to make an embarrassing apology on Thursday morning after holding an on-air funeral for Call the Midwife.
This week, it was reported that season 15 of the beloved BBC period drama would be the show’s last, with the cast having already filmed their final scenes.
According to reports, Call the Midwife bosses wanted the show to ‘go out on a high’ while sources indicated that the long-running BBC drama was coming to an end.
This spurred BBC Radio 2 DJ and series lover Scott into action, opening a phone line for devastated fans to ring in and celebrate their love for the show.
But the BBC then reassured fans on Thursday that Call The Midwife ‘isn’t going anywhere’ after claims the series was coming to an end after 13 years.
The happy news made its way to Scott during his breakfast show, forcing him into an awkward and hilarious but ultimately welcome apology live on air.

I may have done a bad thing here, so I’m going to read this prepared statement from the BBC which I’ve just received.’
Scott then began reading the BBC’s statement: ‘The BBC would like to reassure fans that Call the Midwife will remain at the heart of the BBC for years to come.
‘As previously announced, there are two Christmas specials, a new series, a film and prequel series, before a sixteenth series in due course. Call the Midwife isn’t going anywhere!’
In addition to the BBC’s official communication, the Call the Midwife team also released their own statement on Instagram to put shocked and worried fans at ease.

‘Call the Midwife isn’t going anywhere,’ the statement continues. ‘We hope this puts your minds at ease!’
‘Meanwhile, our team continue their work on season 15… with some thrilling overseas filming coming very soon!’
The BBC sent out the good news after it had been reported in the Daily Star that the period drama, which started in 2012, would soon be coming to an end.
The BBC had already confirmed earlier this year that the world of Nonnatus House would soon be expanding, with a prequel TV series on the way.
The new show will still be set in Poplar, but during the Second World War, and will begin production in 2026.
There’s also a film in the works (Picture: BBC/Neal Street Productions /Olly Courtney)BBC Film and production company Neal Street are also hard at work on a Call the Midwife film, which will be set overseas in 1972 and feature much-loved characters from the original show.
The new projects will be written, created and produced by the all-female team behind Call the Midwife, including showrunner Heidi Thomas and executive producers Pippa Harris and Ann Tricklebank.
The BBC said further details about the prequel series will be shared with fans later this year.
The BBC have said a sixteenth series will arrive in ‘due course’ (Picture: BBC/Neal Street Productions /Olly Courtney)Creator and writer Heidi Thomas said in a statement: ‘The opening of new doors at Nonnatus House feels profoundly emotional, and yet just right.
I have never run out of stories for our midwives, and I never will. But having wept, laughed, and raged my way from 1957 to 1971, I found myself yearning to delve into the deeper past.
‘There will be so much in the prequel for our wonderful, loyal fans, including the appearance of some familiar (if much younger!) faces.’
