The US president announced the reciprocal tariffs in a major escalation of his trade war that threatens to stoke inflation and stall growth in an event he called ‘Liberation Day.’

‘My fellow Americans, this is Liberation Day,’ he said during an event at the Rose Garden of the White House on Wednesday.

‘We have been waiting for a long time. April 2, 2025, will forever be known as the day American industry was reborn, the day America’s destiny was reclaimed and the day that we began to make America wealthy again.’
