Ted Lasso is set for a return, but fans are worried about what the future holds.

The beloved show, which has a 90% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes across its three seasons, last aired in 2023 with fans wondering what’s to come from the series.

Created by and starring Jason Sudeikis, the Apple TV Plus series followed the titular character, an American college football coach hired to coach the fictional Richmond FC.

Despite a lack of faith in his chances, the at times clueless coach managed to prove he had what it took to motivate the players and bring them back from relegation.

Now, the streamer has confirmed a fourth season is on the way after Jason gave a hint of what’s to come.

‘That’s the official word,’ he recently told New Heights podcast hosts Jason and Travis Kelce. ‘Ted’s coaching a women’s team, so there, that’s it.’

He jokingly said ‘that’s too many questions’ when pressed on whether or not Ted will be heading back to the US, but the talk of a new team has fans worried.

‘I mean, I know he’s the protagonist but I feel that missing the entire rest of the team would change the show too much,’ wrote @ConsistentAsparagus on Reddit.

‘Sounds more like a spin off than season 4 if most of the characters won’t be there – Coach Beard, Roy Kent, Keeley, Rebecca, Jamie, Nate etc,’ agreed @malin7.

‘Why can’t they just leave it as it is,’ asked @_GuyBrushThreepw00d, while @pseud_o_nym added: ‘Mistake. Always leave them wanting more. You can’t capture a moment once it’s passed.’

And @TheLordofAllThings ranted: ‘That is the exact opposite of what season 4 should be. It should be about the rest of the existing team after Lasso leaves, not him after leaving them.’

Others argued that ‘completely removed every other character from the show’ would be a bad move, although @PyukuBB is hoping the women’s team is part of Richmond FC.

Not everyone was quite so down on the idea, with other fans suggesting the show was finding a way to evolve.

Reddit user @Dave-os said: ‘I hate how shows with a completed arc just keep going past a clearly intended third act. At least here it’s starting a new one.

‘And I trust the writers would be able to make audiences care about a new team the same way they were able to make them care about the original one.’

Someone else hailed the new season ‘outstanding news’, and a different fan pointed out that Ted Lasso could be just what telly fans need given darker shows on the air like Severance.

‘I’m excited,’ wrote @judocobra. ‘It’s a feel good show and if they can capture that magic it would be very much welcomed as a balance, especially after the griefing Severance does to me.’

Unfortunately, Jason hasn’t offered much in the way of details about the next season.

In a statement, he teased: ‘As we all continue to live in a world where so many factors have conditioned us to ‘look before we leap’, in season 4, the folks at AFC Richmond learn to LEAP BEFORE THEY LOOK, discovering that wherever they land, it’s exactly where they’re meant to be.’

And Matt Cherniss, head of programming for Apple TV+, was similarly vague about what fans can expect from the story.

He added: ‘Ted Lasso has been nothing short of a juggernaut, inspiring a passionate fan base all over the world, and delivering endless joy and laughter, all while spreading kindness, compassion and unwavering belief.

‘Everyone at Apple is thrilled to be continuing our collaboration with Jason and the brilliant creative minds behind this show.’

Ted Lasso is available to stream on Apple TV Plus.
