Channel 4 today released all episodes of a gritty new crime drama starring Amanda Seyfried.

Based on a New York Times bestseller by Liz Moore, Long Bright River is a suspenseful eight-part thriller starring the Mamma Mia! star alongside Top Boy’s Nicholas Pinnock and The Wire’s John Doman.

The show sees Seyfried play Mickey, a police officer on the beat in Philadelphia, facing a city ravaged by the opioid crisis. After a string of murders, Mickey begins to piece together how her personal history is linked to the case.

Head of Acquisitions at Channel 4 Polly Scates said they were ‘immediately hooked’ by the thriller, as well as Amanda Seyfried’s ‘scene-stealing performance’.

The show has already been available in the US on Peacock, with viewers taking to social media to share their thoughts – and one fan even labelling it a ‘masterpiece’.

Taking to X to share their reaction to the show, @debrapalermo wrote: ‘I was enthralled for all 8 episodes. It’s a slow burn with lots of twists and turns. Amanda Seyfried is once again stunning and sublime.

‘But the superstar of Long Bright River is Callum Vinson. Little dude deserves an Emmy. I adored him in Chucky but I worshipped him in this!’

@shboogies chimed in, adding: ‘I spent my entire day binging Long Bright River and omg. A masterpiece.’

@effoff1988 compared the show to Mare of Easttown, writing: ‘Long Bright River may not be as polished and impeccably paced as its closest comp, Mare of Easttown, but it is still a compelling, well-made miniseries with a stellar star turn from Amanda Seyfried, who deserves serious Emmy consideration.

They added: ‘The finale wrecked me.’

‘Two episodes into Long Bright River and my blood is already boiling (in a good way). Amanda Seyfried can do no wrong and this needs to be talked about more,’ tweeted @mkingsle.

However, not everyone could get behind the new show, with @InDarkWeRisePod writing: ‘Wanted to like this, but alas, it’s not to be. A dreadfully slow story about a Philadelphia police officer searching for her drug addicted sister who has gone missing.

‘Amanda Seyfried isn’t terrible, but the writing is horrendously bad. Slow, filler, dull. 2/10.’ Oof – we’ll let you be the judge.

Long Bright River is available to stream on Channel 4.
