A comedian has been given millions of dollars to stage an elaborate plane crash at a fake airport.

Known for his cringe-inducing comedy, Nathan Fielder has never been one to shy away from crazy set pieces.

In the first season of his HBO series, The Rehearsal, the comedian was given a budget of $60million to help people tackle difficult conversations and decisions by letting them put on full-scale rehearsals, complete with sets and professional actors.

Yet, while we don’t know the exact budget for his second series, it appears he has turned to more pressing matters by using his large-scale rehearsals to try and help real-life airline crews.

In the trailer for the second season of The Rehearsal, Fielder introduces his plan to fix aviation disasters through meticulous planning.

He can be heard saying: ‘I’ve been studying commercial-aviation disasters as a hobby.

‘And I started to notice a disturbing pattern in the causes of these crashes.’

When talking to a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) officer, Fielder adds that he has ‘experience with creating elaborate role-playing scenarios’ and he can put HBO’s money ‘towards this’.

He concludes by saying: ‘Let’s work together to save some lives.’

To help prevent air traffic control calamities, he can be seen building a replica of an airport on a soundstage and recruits dozens of actors and real-life pilots to engage in this real-life experiment.

At one point during the trailer, Fielder can even be seen in front of Congress trying to advocate for his system to be implemented on a larger scale.

At the end, Fielder can then be seen walking amongst a plane crash with actors pretending to be wounded.

Responding to the trailer on X, filmmaker Darren Aronofsky said: ‘Cannot wait. Thank you.’

@schwulest also wrote: ‘Omg was Nathan also behind the resurgence of domestic aviation crashes and near-misses?’

Meanwhile, @eytanelbaz said: ‘Thank you @nathanfielder. Laughter is always welcome.’

Just like the first season in 2022, this new six-episode series is bound to have Fielder’s iconic cringeworthy comedy and deadpan delivery.

The comedian has executive-produced the project in addition to writing, directing, and starring in the show.

The Rehearsal is part of Fielder’s overall deal with HBO, which also includes How To With John Wilson, which he executive-produced.

Fielder has also starred in Nathan For You as well as The Curse, alongside Emma Stone.

The Rehearsal will be available to watch on HBO on April 20.
