Bethesda’s remaster of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion has racked up some impressive numbers on Steam, surpassing the likes of Marvel Rivals and Apex Legends.

The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered was finally released yesterday, after countless leaks and rumours, and it appears players are very hungry for some retro Elder Scrolls action.

After it was shadowdropped during Bethesda’s livestream, the remaster soared to the top of Steam’s best-sellers list within an hour – even with a £49.99 price tag.

The remaster managed to rack up some impressive player numbers too. Within 24 hours, The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered hit a concurrent peak player count of 182,298 on Steam, the fourth highest at the time, behind only Counter-Strike 2, PUBG: Battlegrounds, and Dota 2.

At the time of writing, the concurrent player count has dropped to just under 80,000, but it’s still the seventh highest on the platform (via SteamDB).

These numbers are notably higher than the all-time peak for The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim Special Edition, which hit 69,906 players. However, it hasn’t yet surpassed Bethesda’s last game, Starfield, which hit a peak of 330,723 players when it launched in 2023.

Considering this is a remaster of a 19 year-old game though, Bethesda are no doubt very happy with the results. There’s no way to tell exactly how it’s done on consoles yet, but it is the number one seller on PSN at the moment.

This might not be the peak for The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered either. According to insider eXtas1s, there is ‘active work’ happening for a Switch 2 port – although he gives no specifics on when it might come out.

A Switch 2 version wouldn’t be surprising when you consider Bethesda’s support of the original Switch. The publisher released The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus, Doom, and Doom Eternal on the platform, and with the upcoming Doom: The Dark Ages also rumoured for Switch 2, Oblivion feels like a shoe-in.

Microsoft at large hasn’t announced any games for the Switch 2 yet, despite repeatedly stating its intentions to support the console. However, some announcements could turn up at the Xbox summer showcase on Sunday, June 8 – just three days after the new console’s launch.
