Kate Winslet’s co-star left her with ‘lots of bruises’ after wild sex scene
‘There was never one awkward or weird moment. I loved it,’ he said of the experience.

Patrick Wilson is ‘sure’ that Kate Winslet ended up with bruises on her backside after they filmed a famous sex scene together – before the days of intimacy coordinators.
The 51-year-old actor starred opposite Titanic actress Winslet, 49, in the 2006 film Little Children, where they play bored suburbanites, Brad and Sarah, whose friendship gradually grows into a mutual attraction after they bring their kids on a string of play dates.
But he’s noted that shooting the steamy scene where their characters consummate their affair in a laundry room – something people still get ‘flustered’ over with him in real life – was different to how it would be today.
The lengthy scene includes vigorous simulated sex and the appearance of both actors being fully nude – although there were modesty coverings for both, kept carefully out of shot.
Speaking on The Hollywood Reporter’s It Happened in Hollywood podcast, Wilson recalled setting up a dinner with his new co-star and her then-husband, director Sam Mendes, ahead of filming.
‘Just to be like, alright, we’re about to start this movie together. We’re going to be very into it. So it kind of levelled the playing field. You could make tons of jokes, but I think we knew the drill,’ he explained.

‘There was never one awkward or weird moment. Never one. I loved it,’ he added of his experience working with the Oscar-winner in such close quarters.
No body doubles were used in the scene (‘That was pre-crossfit. I was a big runner then, I guess,’ Wilson said), which also led him to address the rumours that Winslet bruised her bum while filming their intimate scene.
‘I’m sure there were lots of bruises. Put it this way: I haven’t done a scene like that since post-#MeToo and intimacy coordinators,’ he shared.

The movie, directed by Tár filmmaker Todd Field, follows Winslet’s unhappy housewife who starts up an affair, and while there was another ‘equally graphic’ intimate scene featuring Wilson and Jennifer Connelly as his onscreen wife, it was ultimately cut from the film.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind actress Winslet explained at the time of the film’s release that the intimate scene was rehearsed ‘fully clothed’ so when it came to actually filming it, she ‘forgot’ that she was naked on set.

‘We did look out for each other and we laughed a hell of a lot. It sounds ridiculous but at a certain point you forget that you’re naked with a relative stranger. … My hips and backside really hurt the next day.’
