‘Masterpiece’ Stephen King film quietly leaving Netflix and fans only have days to watch
A beloved coming-of-age film based on a Stephen King book is about to leave Netflix, meaning viewers don’t have long to watch. Stand By Me was released in 1986 and became an instant classic, starring Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, Jerry O’Connell and Kiefer Sutherland. The movie focused on a group of young friends who go on an adventure to find the dead body of a missing boy, with the journey bringing them all closer. If you haven’t watched Stand By Me yet – or just want to take a trip down memory lane with the cast again – you only have a few days as the flick will be removed from Netflix in the UK and US on February 28, with the last day to watch it on February 27. Despite hitting the big screen nearly four decades ago, it has remained a firm favorite with film fans, and currently commands an audience score of 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, compared to a 92% critics ranking. Asim B praised: ‘It [is an] innocent masterpiece that dwells deep in the minds of us who were kids. A must watch movie.’ Wil Wheaton, Jerry O’Connell, Corey Feldman and River Phoenix starred in classic hit Stand By Me (Picture: Columbia) ‘You don’t watch movies like you use to when you were younger. Gosh… does anyone? They don’t make ’em like they use to. A perfect blend of story, adventure and drama [sic],’ Jay M posted. Stanny R wrote: ‘One of the best movies I’ve ever seen and certainly the best in its category. ‘Rarely does a film touch me like this one did. Perfect capture of a young friendship. Lifetime performances from Phoenix and Wheaton in particular!’ Jacob B agreed: ‘A charming, nostalgic and even poignant coming-of-age film with memorable characters brought to life by a well-chosen, well-directed group of young actors. The movie has gone down as a coming-of-age classic (Picture: Columbia) ‘Stand By Me is a timeless classic that still stands the test of time remaining one of the best Stephen King films to date, not just in terms of adaptations of his non-horror stories but Stephen King films in general.’ As James A added: ‘An absolutely outstanding film from start to finish. The acting of the main lads that the story follows, the cinematography, the music. All of it. Top notch. ‘The film is funny, emotional and dramatic and the aforementioned performances of the main kids just emphasise that further. A true classic film. 9/10 [sic].’ It was first released in 1986 (Picture: Columbia) Stand By Me was adapted from a 1982 novel by horror king Stephen, titled The Body, and directed by Rob Reiner. In a lengthy cast interview with Variety in 2016, to celebrate the 30-year anniversary, Corey – who played Teddy Duchamp – touched on the acclaim the film was met with, and whether there would ever be a reboot. ‘It’s become a cult classic,’ he said at the time. ‘It’s brought up all the time, “Why don’t you do a sequel.” It could only be made if Rob wanted to do it. Stand By Me is leaving Netflix later this month (Picture: Columbia) ‘I’m not saying there should be one, but it’s certainly something that could warrant one.’ ‘It was magical to make,’ Jerry – aka Vern Tessio – added. ‘Just being a kid up there with these guys. It was such a bond. It’s just like the movie says, you never have friends like you did when you were 12.’ Stand By Me is available to stream on Netflix now. Got a story?
