‘Skin-crawling’ Irish horror movie is finally added to Amazon Prime Video

A chilling Irish horror movie has been added to the Amazon Prime Video slate, with a huge Rotten Tomatoes score.

Nocebo was released in 2022, with Casino Royale star Eva Green swapping James Bond for something a little more sinister.

The flick follows fashion designer Christine, who comes down with a debilitating illness after coming into contact with a tick-ridden dog.

Things take a turn when a mysterious woman, Christine (Chai Fonacier) turns up at their home, claiming that Christine hired her to be a caregiver as her symptoms worsen, but her family – including husband Felix (Mark Strong) and daughter Bobs (Billie Gadsdon) – don’t trust her.

As Christine gets closer to her patient, it becomes clear that all is not as it seems, and that caregiving is the last thing on her mind…

Between the twists, turns and unsettling scenes, there are themes about fast fashion, and the exploitation of workers making some of the outfits hanging up in our wardrobes.

Nocebo has now joined the slate of horror films on Amazon Prime Video, and currently boasts a critics Rotten Tomatoes score of 74%, compared to a 69% audience rating.

Cath Clarke of the Guardian praised: ‘Director Lorcan Finnegan, working with a script by Garret Shanley, creates some unsettling moments and there are sharp prickles of commentary about our attitude to fast fashion and the workers who make our clothes.’

Bethany Lola of Loud and Clear reviews agreed: ‘Nocebo will have your skin crawling from start to finish as you dive into Eva Green ’s Christine’s paranoid world in Lorcan Finnegan’s latest feature.’

Viewer Paolo P commented: ‘A gripping supernatural thriller right through to the end. Kept me hooked and not let down at the end.’

As an anonymous fan added: ‘A clever, well written story, helped by Eva Green’s performance.

‘A tale of revenge, a modern day fable, a glimpse on the evils of the garment industry, their exploitation of poorer, third world countries, for cheap, non union labor [sic].’

Director Lorcan Finnegan opened up about the exploitative theme in an interview at the time of release, shedding light on why he decided to go down that route.

‘There’s this neo-colonial thing going on, where countries outsource everything, so they’re still the masters but have all their manufacturing done in countries that are cheaper, and they can bypass safety regulations, and they can exploit people from afar,’ he told MovieWeb.

‘Colonialism eventually turned into this kind of consumer capitalist society. Everything has become a bit homogenized. That’s partly why artists are going back a little bit and thinking about where their cultural identity is.

‘Because at the moment, especially with art and fast fashion, every high street looks the same. Same shops, same crap.

‘People are getting paid less and less, but they get to feel like they have wealth by being able to go into a shop and buy a whole load of clothes that are manufactured in Bangladesh or Vietnam.

‘Something that is very cheap, but it gives them a sense that they have money, so it’s a self-perpetuating nightmare.’

Nocebo is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video now.
