A game show blasted by some viewers as ‘sadistic’ has handed out the biggest prize in game show history.

Premiering on Amazon Prime Video in December, Beast Games was co-created by YouTuber MrBeast (real name Jimmy Donaldson) who boasts over 362 million subscribers on that platform.

Inspired by the South Korean Netflix series Squid Game, the competition show saw a whopping 1,000 contestants competing for $10,000,000 (£7.9 million) – the biggest cash prize in reality TV history – through a series of physical and mental challenges.

However, before it aired, the show came under fire and was hit by claims of sexual harassment, ‘inhumane’ conditions and insufficient wages by contestants. MrBeast said the allegations were ‘blown out of proportion.’

This week, the show came to an end, with one contestant walking away with the mammoth prize.

Jeffrey Randall Allen, known as player 831, took home the $10 million after going head-to-head with fellow player Twana Barnett.

The finale began with the last six players, with the final two then being tasked with trying to read each other.

In the game, Jeffrey had to guess in which of 10 briefcases had the $10 million cheque hidden inside.

After being blindfolded while waiting for the cheque to be concealed by Twana as she mixed the order around, Jeffrey then miraculously chose the correct case in the first round.

He then celebrated the incredible win by siding down a mountain of cash before being joined by his wife and one of his sons on set.

Jeffrey had previously explained on the show that his son Lucas suffers from a rare brain disease called Creatine Transporter Deficiency and pledged any prize money towards finding a cure.

‘Can you believe that? $10 million,’ he said to his wife after winning. Speaking through tears she added: ‘You’re gonna find Lucas a cure.’

As runner-up, Twana was also given $100,000, with Mr Beast saying he’d also given $20 million to 85 players, with another also getting a $1.8 million private island.

Every player was also given $2,000 for competing.

Across the series there was no shortage of brutal challenges, which included MrBeast tempting players to leave the game for an immediate cash prize and contestants also having to sacrifice each other to proceed.

It became Amazon Prime Video’s most watched unscripted series ever, attracting over 50 million viewers in less than a month.

However, critics and some viewers said the concept felt ‘dystopian’ and slammed those taking part as ‘selfish and individualistic’.

It also holds a dismal 13% rating on review site Rotten Tomatoes. Although the show hasn’t officially been renewed for a second season, MrBeast recently said he was ‘sure’ it would happen.

Beast Games is streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
