Andrew Scott’s attendance at the Screen Actors Guild Awards took a horrific turn in 2020.

This year’s event may have been smooth sailing for the actor, 48, but it hasn’t always been that way as the star revealed just five years ago, he was struck with a kidney stone, which resulted in a secret hospital stay.

While chatting to the media at Sunday night’s event, Andrew recalled the nightmare moment he was applauding a fellow star during her acceptance speech when he suddenly curled over in pain.

Quickly surrounded by his famous pals who called emergency services and got him water, the star admitted he was caught off guard but knew exactly what the cause of the pain was.

‘I was beside Phoebe [Waller-Bridge], and Laura Dern had just won best supporting actress [for ‘Marriage Story’], and we were standing up,’ he told Variety last night.

‘I don’t know if anyone has ever experienced having a kidney stone before, but it sends you, the pain is so immediate,’ he explained.

Andrew, who was in the back of the room at the time of the attack, was overwhelmed with pain and said by the time Laura had finished her speech, he was ‘writhing around in agony’ on the floor, desperately trying to remove his suit.

Paramedics were quick to arrive on scene and rushed him to the hospital, where he underwent a secret stay.

While he was chatty about the experience, when asked what happened once he received medical attention, he jokingly told the news outlet: ‘That’s too much. People don’t need to know about that. It was grisly.’

Despite the pain the star was in, his experience went under the radar and he claims that other than those who were standing close to him, no one even knew about it.

As for how his time at the award show last night went, Andrew was nominated for outstanding performance by a male actor in a Television Movie or Limited Series for Ripley, but lost out to Colin Farrell.

The Irish actor collected his first-ever SAG Award win for his role in the critically acclaimed HBO series, The Penguin.

In his speech, he shared a moment with his fellow nominees, telling the room: ‘I want to thank my fellow nominees. Richard [Gadd], Andrew [Scott], Kevin [Kline], and Javier [Bardem], my deepest respect and admiration.

‘It sounds cheesy to say, it is cheesy, but we’re all supporting actors, there’s the big parts, the leads, the small parts, the extras and all that s*** but we all support each other, that’s what we do. In the bringing alive of stories, we support. We support the writers and directors.’

It marks the sixth award he has collected this award season for his performance in the Lauren LeFranc series based on the DC Comics character of the same name.

He has also won a Golden Globe, Critics Choice, Irish Film and Television Academy Award, Satellite Award, and Saturn Award for his portrayal of the criminal kingpin.
