EA’s first Battlefield Labs test session has led to an abundance of leaked gameplay videos, showing off the huge map size and a new revive mechanic.

After Battlefield 5 and Battlefield 2042 failed to please the fanbase, EA is taking extra measures to ensure Battlefield 6 puts the would-be Call Of Duty rival back on course.

As announced last month, a big part of this is a major increase in player tests through the revamped community testing program, Battlefield Labs. This is where registered players can try out new weapons and gadgets on a separate server, and play a very early version of the game.

The first of these Battlefield Labs testing sessions took place last weekend, and while those invited are not supposed to post footage online, inevitably many did anyway.

In the leaked gameplay videos on Reddit, the map from the first gameplay trailer is revealed to be called Abbasid, although it’s still unclear where exactly it is set (the name Abbasid comes from an 8th century caliphate originally based in what is now Iraq but which later relocated to Cairo).

As you’d expect from Battlefield, there’s plenty of destruction and impressive physics, along with some worryingly immersive screeching sound effects from surrounding explosions.

One video shows off the series’ staple vehicular combat, as a tank trundles through the urban streets and shoots down buildings. There’s also a new assist mechanic where you can drag fallen allies across the floor to safety before reviving them.

If you want a better look at the user interface you can find images here, which also gives an indication of the map’s size.

Many of these gameplay videos are still online several days later, so EA is clearly not too perturbed by the leaks, which might be because the general sentiment appears to be largely positive from those within diehard Battlefield circles – and EA would certainly welcome the positivity for the franchise.

‘I couldn’t resist and watched the leaked Battlefield 6 gameplay,’ one X user wrote. ‘Glad I did. This brings back hope. It looked like an actual battlefield game.’

‘Amazing,’ another added on Reddit in response to the destruction. ‘Keep listening DICE.’

‘The audio is crazy good,’ one user wrote. ‘It sounds like explosions are reverberating off the buildings.’

Battlefield 6 is being developed under a new ‘Battlefield Studios’ umbrella consisting of four studios. DICE, the main developer of previous Battlefield games, is working on multiplayer; Criterion is developing the single-player campaign; while Motive is creating multiplayer maps and ‘single-player mission content’.

The last studio, Ripple Effect, is ‘working on an experience that is really going to open Battlefield up to a whole group of new players’ – which tracks with rumours of a battle royale spin-off to rival Call Of Duty: Warzone.

While it’s unclear when the next Battlefield Labs test session is, you can still sign up to take part on the official website, so there’ll likely be plenty more leaks before launch. Battlefield 6 still doesn’t have a release date, but it’s expected to arrive later this year.
