By the time Jodie Whittaker was cast as the lead in Doctor Who, she’d already carved out an impressive career.

Born in West Yorkshire, she graduated from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 2005.

After appearing in productions of The Storm and The Seagull, her first major screen role came in the 2006 film Venus, going on to appear in Black Mirror, One Day and Broadchurch.

In 2017 she was announced as the Thirteenth Doctor in the long-running series, making history as the first female in the role, holding it until stepping down in 2022 after three seasons and five specials.

Since then, she’s starred in One Night, Time and the newly released Netflix series Toxic Town – which is based on the Corby toxic waste case.

Before bingeing that show, here’s everything we know about the actress’ personal life away from the cameras, including her marriage to her husband, who was in an Oscar-winning thriller.

Jodie, 42, met her husband Christian Contreras, a Belizean-American actor and writer while in drama school.

After they were married in 2008, the couple welcomed a daughter in 2015, followed by their second child in 2022.

They have never publicly shared the names of their children.

Christian is best known for acting in films and shows including Odyssey, Halo: Nightfall, Fury, Zero Dark Thirty, Foundation, The Man Who Fell to Earth and Breeders.

He most recently played Jerry Knox in the Disney Plus series A Thousand Blows, which stars Stephen Graham.

His first job was adapting the cult hit book Labyrinth by journalist Randall Sullivan, which follows the police investigation into the murders of the rappers Tupac Shakur and Biggie Smalls.

He is also credited as a co-writer on the 2018 crime drama, City of Lies, which starred Johnny Depp and Forest Whitaker.

In 2011 Jodie told The Independent the following about her wedding: ‘We had a big wedding in Arizona – very attention-seeking, big dress, big guest-list kind of wedding. It was obviously in my top five days…’

It came after she’s previously said she felt ‘really young when she got married at 26’.

‘Especially living and working somewhere as fast-paced as London – where you can’t even plan for the next week, let alone commit to something for the rest of your life. But I’m a good wife, though I think I’m a bit rubbish at home comforts,’ she shared.

The actress once spoke to The Mirror about wanting to avoid speaking about her relationship in detail in public.

‘He’s from Tucson and I’m from Huddersfield. But I don’t divulge stuff about him, because I don’t think he’d appreciate it when he’s not here to speak for himself. We do get comments like, “Where the hell did you two meet?” We’re like an international couple,’ she said.

It also stars Sex Education’s Aimee Lou Wood as Tracey Taylor and Bridgerton’s Claudia Jessie as Maggie Mahon – other real mothers who took part in the court case.
