Western drama miniseries 1883 first hit screens in 2021, but a whole new audience are now discovering it after it landed on Netflix.
The ten-episode series is a stand-alone prequel to Kevin Costner’s Yellowstone, and stars Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Sam Elliott and Isabel May as the narrator.
It marked the first time McGraw and Hill, both 57, played onscreen husband and wife, having been married in real life for nearly three decades.
They played Duttons’ great-grandparents, James and Margaret, leading their family in travelling across the country from Tennessee to Texas and then Montana to own the land that became the Yellowstone Ranch after the Civil War.

Sharing their thoughts, one person, Austin wrote on Google Reviews: ‘A++++ Even as a stand-alone, without any ‘Yellowstone’ knowledge, it’s an incredible ride. Sam Elliott is, as always, phenomenal. Tim McGraw is a revelation.’
Kenny Mac called the series ‘a gold nugget’ adding: ‘Brutal but beautiful, punchy but poignant. I went into this with no prior knowledge of Yellowstone or that this is a prequel, so I’m reviewing this as a standalone. I was utterly blown away by it.’
1883 has landed on Netflix four years after its release, and stormed the charts (Picture: Paramount+)Mirabella said: ‘Honestly, this is 1 of the best shows on TV for this age and condition in terms of women’s achievements in a long time! I absolutely LOVE the role Mr. Sheridan gave to Elsa and the family, the ride alongs, the force of nature. No pretense, just honest people with no judgement and a zest for adventure and what the next conquest brings!’
‘Hard to explain how much I absolutely loved this show,’ Justin said, continuing: ‘The photography of the show itself it’s nothing short of magnificent, extremely well directed, hooks you from the get go and holds no punches when it comes to display how harsh everything about a journey west through the Great Plains toward the last bastion of untamed America actually was.
‘The acting was pretty close to perfection, also the pacing and the fact that the plot also kinda feels like a documentary rather than fiction speaks volumes about how well done this show is.’

1883 was the first Yellowstone spin-off, originally launching on Paramount+ before the story was picked up decades later in 1923.
Creator Taylor Sheridan explained that time jump in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, saying: ‘I chose that moment in time to peek back in because you’re seeing the children that we’ve met in 1883 attempting to raise another generation of Dutton.’
1883 is available to watch on Netflix.
