Netflix’s haunting four-part drama Adolescence is the show on everyone’s lips around the world.

Not only has it garnered rave reviews from critics and endless praise for its unique one-take style, but it’s even beginning to spark political change with calls for the series to be shown in schools.

Written by Jack Thorne, the series has shone a light on British talent such as Stephen Graham and Erin Doherty, as well as teenage sensation Owen Cooper who is sensationally performing in his first ever professional acting gig.

Yet, as Adolescence continues to reach audiences across the globe, becoming the most-streamed series of the week on Netflix in 71 countries, it has made fans of Charlie Brooker’s Black Mirror realise something.

When Black Mirror first debuted on Channel 4 in 2011 with its infamous The National Anthem episode, featuring a Prime Minister and a pig, viewers were struck by its daring social commentary on British culture.

But after Netflix picked up the show between its second and third seasons, it gradually started to move towards featuring Hollywood A-listers, such as Salma Hayek and Aaron Paul in Season 6.

Commenting on a post that explained how Cooper was acting for the first time, @StephyBx_ said on X: ‘This is why Black Mirror is annoying me. There’s so much talent out there especially in the UK.’

Another user, @Ok0rie_, commented beneath, echoing these comments by saying: ‘The way it just went down hill when Hollywood took over.’

Commenting beneath Netflix’s trailer on March 13, @MrLewisVuitton claimed that the show was much better ‘when it was British and had up and coming actors’.

A fourth, @PanicStation26, wrote: ‘Excited for new black mirror, but I do miss the earlier seasons when it was all like, B-list and lesser known British and Irish actors, there was a vibe to it.’

Another, @abcdrih, added: ‘I do feel like what made #BlackMirror so unsettling was that, in the beginning, most of the actors were unknown. it made everything feel more real, like it could happen to anyone.’

A sixth person, @DottyShellz, explained further that while the ‘production quality’ has risen since the beginning, ‘its way less authentic’.

In 2023, Metro wrote how out of the 16 episodes commissioned since the Netflix deal, nine of them have been either set in America or feature a significantly American cast.

But with season 7 around the corner, Charlie Brooker has reassured that it will return to the show’s ‘OG’ style.

When Netflix originally dropped the trailer for Season 7 of the sci-fi dystopian anthology, fans were sent into a frenzy.

For the first time in Black Mirror history, fans learned that the show is going to reprise several characters from previous seasons.

The first sequel is season four’s USS Callister, which follows a group of employees at virtual reality video game company Infinity.

The second will see Will Poulter reprise his role as 80s video game company worker Colin Ritman from the 2018 interactive Black Mirror movie Bandersnatch.

Adolescence is available to stream on Netflix. Season 7 of Black Mirror will air on Netflix on April 10.
