Previous Page Next PageThe hit sci-fi fantasy drama American Gods, praised as ‘captivating’ and ‘fantastic’ by fans, is leaving Amazon Prime imminently.
The three-season adaptation of the 2001 Neil Gaiman novel of the same name ran from 2017 to 2021 and stars Gillian Anderson, Emily Browning and Kristin Chenoweth.
The plot follows ex-convict Shadow Moon (Ricky Whittle) who encounters a mysterious man named Mr. Wednesday (Ian McShane) who knows far too much about his past, present and future.
Soon, he becomes embroiled in a brewing conflict between the Old and New Gods that promises devastating consequences as the pantheon of deities reckon with their increasing obsoleteness in modern-day America.
The official synopsis reads: ‘When Shadow Moon is released from prison, he meets the mysterious Mr. Wednesday and a storm begins to brew.
‘Left adrift by the recent death of his wife, Shadow is hired as Mr. Wednesday’s bodyguard.

What are people saying about American Gods? The Emmy-nominated Starz series, which landed an impressive 92% on Rotten Tomatoes for its first season, has been widely praised by viewers.
‘Best premium series on TV. As much as I Ioved season one, I still think season two is great. It’s visibly fantastic, interesting and mysterious,’ Christine wrote in a review.
‘American Gods is a beautiful show, especially in 4k. The soundtrack is superb. The acting is top notch,’ user Jim Davis agreed.
‘American Gods doesn’t hold back with its artistic visuals, story, and characters. Ricky Whittle(Shadow Moon) and Ian McShane (Mr. Wednesday). Have an interesting dynamic, with dark undertones that leave you wanting more,’ Riley Goosen echoed.
There is plenty of praise for the show (Picture: Jasper Savage/Starz/Amazon/Kobal/REX/Shutterstock)Over on X, user Uncle Timi wrote: ‘God, I forgot how brilliant the first season of American Gods was!’
And on Rotten Tomatoes, an anonymous user said: ‘Absolutely beautiful imagery, and nice solid storytelling. Both brutal and thought-provoking. Very rare in television…’
Although those eager to watch it should be warned that the show was cancelled after three seasons, so you may be left with a somewhat unsatisfying ending.
And some did take issue with the pacing of the series, with some complaints that it was ‘frustratingly slow’ and at times ‘confusing’ so may be worth testing out to see if it is your speed.

The show was then helmed by Jesse Alexander.
As recently as early 2024, lead star Ricky claimed the show was ‘very much not dead’ and that there were discussions to revive the series on a new platform.
‘So there’s more story there for Shadow Moon to return. And it’s something that I’m very interested in. I want to finish the book American Gods and I want to finish it for the fans,’ Ricky said at the time, per Screenrant.
Although nothing has materialised since.
American Gods is streaming on Amazon Prime until the end of March.
