A woman who unexpectedly kissed BTS star Jin at a fan event last year is under investigation by South Korean police.

Police have summoned the woman, who is in Japan, to come forward for questioning on charges of sexual harassment in a public space over the June 2024 incident in Seoul.

At the fan event, Jin hugged 1,000 fans, but when it came to the woman in question – whose identity isn’t disclosed – she appeared to kiss his face as Jin turned away from her.

The kiss went viral on social media which sparked outrage among protective fans, one of whom filed a criminal complaint against the woman which led to the current investigation.

The June 13 event came the day after Jin was discharged from military duty, as he greeted fans with a three-hour ‘hugathon’ and a performance.

Fans queued up and took to the stage one by one for a chance to meet and cuddle 33-year-old K-pop star Jin, who was born Kim Seok-jin.

However, when one woman seemingly tried to kiss Jin’s face, he looked taken aback and she later wrote on her blog that she kissed him ‘on his neck’ and ‘the skin was very soft’.

Alongside fellow members RM, Jimin, V, Jungkook, Suga and J-Hope, BTS have rocketed to frenzied global fame and success since their first single No More Dream was released in 2013.

In the UK, BTS has had two number one albums with Map of the Soul: Persona and Map of the Soul: 7 hitting the top spot in 2019 and 2020 respectively.

Under South Korean law, each member – with Jin the eldest – isset to enlist for two years of compulsory military service as able-bodied men between the age of 18 and 28.

However, given their global superstar status and contribution to South Korea’s global recognition, the group were allowed to defer their service until they turned 30.

Exemptions have been made in the past for prize-winning athletes, dancers and classical musicians.

BTS is now in hiatus to allow members to complete their service.

In 2022 BTS fans – known to be particularly dedicated – were warned to stay away from the South Korea army camp Jin was serving at, but they turned up regardless.

Despite repeated pleas by Jin and BTS’ management agency Hybe for fans to stay away over fears of overcrowding, people were spotted standing outside the area holding photos and signs relating to the band.

Metro has contacted Jin’s representatives for comment.
