Kim Kardashian is known for facing controversy, especially when it comes to her $4 billion shapewear brand, Skims.

From having to change the name of the brand entirely when it was introduced as Kimono, sparking cultural appropriation backlash, to being accused of ‘greenwashing’ after claiming Skims’ packaging was more environmentally friendly than it was.

Her latest stunt is no different.

The reality TV star, 44, has erected a huge 60-foot balloon of herself donning a tiny blue bikini in the middle of New York City’s Times Square, sparking a huge debate online about her latest attempt to break the internet.

The campaign is to promote her latest Swim Shop Skims collection being released on March 6.

Kim shared an image of the doll to her Instagram Stories, writing: ‘OMG… I cannot believe there is a 60 foot float of me in SKIMS Swim in the middle of Times Square.’

And social media users have been quick to react, branding the stunt everything from ‘beyond weird’ to ‘awful’.

Social media user the_zuzka wrote: ‘To whomever at the city council who approved this: are you ok?’

Instagram user deepdewdoll even suggested that the huge display is ‘violating a public place’ while fredihea suggested this could be Kim’s ‘worst product campaign launch ever’.

However, this is exactly how Kim has built her empire – from controversy. It’s highly unlikely that she’ll even bat an eyelid at the stream of negative comments.

Fans will remember Kim’s viral 2014 Paper magazine cover shot by Jean-Paul Goude in which she posed in a black gown and balancing a champagne glass on her most famous asset, a moment, as emblazoned on the front of the publication, which ‘broke the internet’.

In fact, the TV star threatened to once again ‘break the internet’ with the launch of this exact latest Skims bikini collection.

‘Coming March 6: New Swim Shop. Three years after its breakout launch, the game-changing swim that started it all is back to break the internet (again). @KimKardashian wears the Signature Swim Triangle Bikini Top, size M, and Tanga Bikini Bottom, size S, in Tide,’ Skims wrote in a post on Instagram.

The mogul doesn’t allow any criticism to get to her with anything she does, even when she was met with heavy backlash for advising women to ‘get off your f*****g a** and work’ in an interview with Variety.

Speaking about the reaction from fans on social media, Kim said on an episode of The Kardashians: ‘There’s just been so much going on because of that Variety interview.

‘I said what I said about people working. Do I believe in that? Yes, I believe that you have to work hard in order to do that. But I was just so blindsided by how angry people got.

‘Enough people were triggered, so I want to be responsible and understanding [of] why people feel the way they do, and I do understand that a lot of people weren’t given the same opportunities as us,’ she added.

With an upcoming Skims partnership with sports giant Nike which is already being tipped as ‘ground-breaking’, Kim is the one laughing all the way to the bank.
