Netflix viewers can’t get enough of a new period drama filled with scandal, intrigue and matchmaking shenanigans.

The eight-episode series, The Lady’s Companion, just arrived on the streamer and follows 19th-century chaperone Elena ‘hired to find husbands for three wealthy sisters’ but ends up falling for one of the suitors herself.

The Spanish-language rom-com, starring Cable Girls actor Nadia de Santiago, is set in Madrid in the 1880s has already been called ‘Bridgerton but funnier’ and praised for its ‘gorgeous’ period aesthetic that will completely suck you in.

There’s high society dances, gasp-inducing family drama and a forbidden romance that breaks all the rules of etiquette. What’s not to love?

‘I just binged watched The Lady’s Companion on Netflix. It was so delightful!’ Reddit user ShadowOdinGG wrote to which eager user culture-katie replied: ‘It’s almost 2 AM and I’m on the last episode!’

The sentiment was also echoed on X with @mina calling it ‘SO SO SO SO GOOD’ and saying their ‘chemistry is off the charts’.

‘Just finished watching TheLady’s Companion on Netflix!!! 10/10! So good… need season 2!!!!’ Samantha added to the calls for a second season.

In one review Decider wrote: ‘The Lady’s Companion is a pleasant-enough romantic period comedy with a colourful look and just enough modern touches to keep the episodes from being a slog of costume-drama cliches.’

‘The show is incredibly stylish, with bright pastel colours and a lot of witty dialogue to boot,’ The Review Geek added.

Spanish dramas have proven an undeniable hit on Netflix across genres from the coming-of-age drama Elite which ran for eight seasons to the heart-pounding thriller Money Heist.

And, of course, there is 1920s period drama Cable Girls which follows four young women navigating the ever-evolving city of Madrid after they start work at the country’s first national telephone company.

The Lady’s Companion is available to stream on Netflix now.
