TV show ‘so phenomenally well done’ finally free to stream after 21 years

Buffy The Vampire Slayer spin-off Angel will soon be available to stream for free in the UK.

The supernatural 90s drama is coming to ITVX this spring – so cancel all your plans in the coming months.

The show centres on Buffy’s (Sarah Michelle Gellar) former flame Angel (David Boreanaz), an Irish vampire who is over 240 years old.

After his relationship with Buffy ends, he moves to LA in search of redemption where he finds works a private detective to ‘help the helpless.’

Angel ran for five seasons between 1999 and 2004 – and, along with the likes of Better Call Saul, is considered to be one of the best spin-offs of all time.

On Reddit, viewers urged everyone to binge-watch Angel when it lands on ITVX, describing it as ‘incredible’ and ‘phenomenal.’

Among them was TheSkullmasker who exclaimed: ‘I’ll be honest, over the last year I just watched all of Buffy and then all of Angel and I came out of it honestly thinking Angel ends up being the better show imo, because even though the lows are lower, the highs are higher, and S5 is so phenomenally well done (even DESPITE being rushed bc the show got cancelled) that it’s the first time I’ve ever been heartbroken a show got cancelled.’

Echoing their sentiment, Pumpkins217 shared: ‘It’s incredible. I hated the character of Angel when watching Buffy but he gets much better in his own show not to mention there are incredible side character arcs too. I can’t explain the quality of overall seasons as clearly as with Buffy but I always enjoy watching. Same writing, same type of characters, same banter, same interesting metaphors and emotional moments.

Over on Google, reviewer Adam Stark said: ‘Angel remains one of my favorite TV series of all time. Like a lot of people, I was drawn to the show as I was a fan of Buffy The Vampire Slayer. And while Buffy is an amazing show, Angel is far superior. Angel is a lot darker and more of an adult show compared to Buffy. The characters are very three-dimensional, have flaws, and real problems, and often operate in the grey zone.’

Alisha Parker also added: ‘Love this show there’s action, drama, comedy, & a lil romance. A definite must watch. You won’t regret it. Yeah it’s older so the cgi isn’t what it is today but at the time it was amazing! Buffy and Angel both have a lil cheesiness but it’s lovable and laughable. Good show all around.’

Angel’s arrival on ITVX comes weeks after Sarah, 47, revealed she was ‘on the path’ to a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot after reports it was nearing a pilot order at Hulu.

She revealed she was working with Oscar winner Chloé Zhao, who directed Nomadland, producer Gail Berman andTV writers Nora and Lilla Zuckerman.

On Instagram, Sarah said: ‘I have always listened to the fans and heard your desire to revisit ‘Buffy’ and her world, but it was not something I could do unless I was sure we would get it right.

‘This has been a long process, and it’s not over yet. I promise you, we will only make this show if we know we can do it right. And I will tell you that we are on the path there.

‘I feel so lucky to be on this journey with these four unbelievably talented women, all of whom love Buffy as much as I do. And as much as you do.

‘Thank you to all the fans who never stopped asking for this. This will be for you.’

Although, there has been much excitement, some fans also expressed reservations about such a pioneering show being revived.

Reacting to the reboot news, a fan called Banya6 wrote on Reddit: ‘I’m so intrigued and also so scared.’

‘That makes me kind of nervous,’ Big-Restaurant-2766 added, while Joekitty also commented: ‘I’m worried.’
