A British comedy series labelled ‘sharp and smart’ has soared up the Netflix charts since being released over the weekend.

First hitting screens in 2020, The Other One followed two sisters who uncover each other’s existence following their father’s untimely death at a birthday party.

Running for two seasons, it starred Ellie White (Stath Lets Flats) as Catherine ‘Cathy’ Walcott and Lauren Socha (Misfits) as her half-sister Catherine ‘Cat’ Walcott.

Its writer and director Holly Walsh (who has worked on Dead Boss, Motherland and Amandaland) once explained the concept for the show was sparked after she heard the true story of a man with two families who gave his kids the same name to avoid confusion or being sprung.

When it hit screens, the first season was met with praise from both critics and viewers alike.

‘It is a glorious slice-of-life comedy, way superior to so much else on these days,’ The Observer said.

‘The Other One is funny (often laugh-out-loud so), witty and knowing, and has believable characters writ large but given measured performances by the four leads,’ The Arts Desk added.

Meanwhile viewers said they binged the ‘true gem’ series and ‘loved everything about it’.

‘At first I wasn’t sure I would enjoy this sitcom, but I was so wrong. This show is not only brilliant and deceptive in that it takes one into various funny and very plausible situations, there are always positive and endearing messages left behind. It’s cute, funny and refreshing’ lcpiet posted on IMDB.

This week both seasons were added to Netflix, where it’s quickly soared into the Top 10 and is currently the sixth most-watched TV series on the platform in the UK.

Once speaking to the BBC about the idea for the show, Holly explained: ‘A friend of mine told me a story about a friend of her parents who’d had two families. He called both his kids the same name, so if someone stopped him in the street and said “Oh, how’s Tom?” he wouldn’t have to worry that he was blowing his cover. Being a bit of a comedy magpie I thought that would make a great premise for a story…’

The Other One also stars Rebecca Front as Tess Walcott, Cathy’s mother and Colin’s widow and Siobhan Finneran as Marilyn, Colin’s eccentric mistress and the mother of Cat. Other cast members include Amit Shah (Mr Bates vs. The Post Office), Sarah Kendall (Frayed) and Lolly Adefope (Ghosts).

The Other One is streaming on Netflix.
