Edith Bowman has addressed the ‘lazy’ rumours that she once dated close friend Cat Deeley.

The Scottish radio DJ and TV presenter is best known for hosting Colin and Edith, weekday afternoons, weekend breakfast, and The Radio 1 Review on BBC Radio 1 until 2014.

Over the years she’s also worked with Cat several times, including on Hitlist UK in the 1990s before they went on to host Hit Music Sunday for a year from 2001.

However, in the 90s they also found themselves at the centre of speculation they were also dating after photos were taken of them stumbling out of the Met bar holding onto each other while tipsy.

Edith, now 50, has spoken about the rumours that suggested she and Cat, now 48, were romantically involved.

‘We did get a bit of attention, Cat and I. There’re a few dodgy pictures,’ she laughed while speaking to The Sun.

‘We were – and still are – really good mates. And we liked going out.

‘But suddenly [the story] was Cat and I are a lesbian couple and stuff. It’s so lazy.’

She added: ‘I had a great time when I was at MTV and Radio 1. We did get papped every now and then, we would rock up at the Met Bar, but it wasn’t like we were there every night.’

Edith had previously spoken about the ‘intrusive’ rumours, saying in 2022 that ‘we are in love, but as friends’.

‘Cat Deeley and I, who are still really good mates, we started MTV at the same time and we’d spent so much time just hanging out and going out,’ she said on Angela Scanlon’s Thanks a Million podcast.

‘We were really good mates, and we are really good mates still. And it was like, “Oh, Cat and Edith are in a lesbian relationship”.

‘Photographs of us kind of holding each other up, coming out of the Met bar or whatever was because we were p****d, it wasn’t because we were like, licking each other’s faces off. We are in love, but as friends kind of thing, it’s so bizarre.’

In the interview with The Sun Edith also spoke about how the decision to turn down offers to appear in lads’ mag shoots was ‘the best decision I ever made’.

‘In hindsight, it’s the best thing I’ve ever did, because I think it’s one of the things that allows me that level of anonymity that I still have in my private life. I feel like if I’d done more of them, I would have been much more tabloid fodder,’ she said.

In 2005 Edith began dating Editors frontman Tom Smith, with the couple going on to marry in 2013. They share sons Rudy and Spike.

Meanwhile Cat has been married to comedian and TV presenter Patrick Kielty since 2012, with the couple also having two sons – Milo and James.

In the years since their radio show, Edith has gone on to front the BBC Radio 1 afternoon slot, host Weekend Breakfast and is currently the host of Cinematic Soundtracks on BBC Radio 3 Unwind since the station’s launch in November last year.

Meanwhile Cat has presented Fame Academy, Stars in Their Eyes, So You Think You Can Dance in the United States and last year took over hosting This Morning with Ben Shephard.
